BSR is a stitch regulator foot- not available for every machine and kinda pricy...can be a big help, but IMHO not necessary. It takes a while to coordinate the speed of the machine with your speed in moving the quilt sandwich, which can result in very uneven stitches at first. This is where the practice comes in! Start small and simple, and have fun!

IMHO -in my humble opinion - guessed that one!

I MADE SOME SMALL SANDWICHES AND PRACTICED, I ALSO JUST ORDERED SKILLBUILER PRACTICE PANELS AND COMPANION BOOK BY RENAE ALLEN, HAVEN'T HADA CHANCE TO PRACTICE ON THEM YET, BUT I AM EXCITED YOU CAN GET THEM FROM KEEPSAKEQUILTING.COM, NANCYSNOTIONS.COM, OR RGADESIGNQUILTS.COM, HOPE THAT HELPS

Think I'm going to start practicing! Thanks for the encouragement!

I have a 20 yr. old Kenmore that I FMQ on, I put on the embroidery foot and drop the feed dogs.
The key is the speed and stitch length so practice practice practice to see which works best for you. For me it's a fast speed and around a 2.8 stitch length. If your stitches are looping on the bottom, you are either going too fast or too slow for the stitch length you have chosen. I bought a piece of prequilted fabric from the remnant bin - it's already got the batting in the middle - and I use that to practice using bright contrasting thread. I also use a Free Motion Slider (you need a table or bed on your machine to use a slider) and I bought a Quilt Halo which I am finally getting the hang of using. |
My Kenmore is about 20 years old, too. Glad to know I can use it. Thanks for the diagnosting tools. I'll let you know how it works!
