Free Quilt - What was I thinking.
Today I found a bunch of fabric I intended to use for foundation piecing so I pulled out all the pieces of fabric that I didn't know why I was saving or why I bought in the first place. The fabric that went into this was pulled when I thought "What was I thinking". All that fabric was cut into various width strips and I got 17 blocks completed. Some of the fabric is truly ugly but as I'm lining up the blocks on my design wall I'm really liking it. The name of the quilt will be "What was I thinking". The back will be a yellow and white strip I bought for 90% off - thought it would be a good backing - but stripes? What was I thinking?

Wow, It is going to work after all. When you are finished, please show us.

Sounds like your unexpected plan was perfect ;)

Picture? You have me intrigued.....Several times I have found that 'ugly' discounted fabric which I thought was backing material worked out so well for something that I really wished I had bought more. I am sure others here have had the same experience, including 2 colorways of the same fabric that made a marvelous high selling charity auction quilt.

I have found that there really is no ugly fabric. If you can find the right place for it, it turns out to be beautiful.

Back when I thought a couple of boxes was a "lot" of fabric, I took out the ugliest pieces and made a bear/mountain applique quilt out of them. It was also one of my first quilts and I never would have believed I liked it so much and that it held up so well. That was 30 years ago and I have to admit that I have a few pieces now that are just as ugly but you never know when you might need a trout belly or some weird color combinations for today's patterns.

Bonnie Hunter says if your fabric is still ugly after you cut it up...you didn't cut it up small enough!

What about the picture?

when I was beginning to quilt, I read in some book that every quilt should contain 10% ugly fabric. I've pretty much followed that advice and never regretted it.
