French Braid quilt runner

1 Attachment(s)
Hi! I have been working on a long runner version of the French Braid quilt (96" - 9 feet long! for over the stairs), and I like it very much. My question is this: For the black binding and the purple side borders I will have to piece them. Will it look weird to have a seam going across the center on both sides of the large tilted square? Or would it be better to do the border and binding in thirds - might that be more or less distracting?

Here are pics of the original photo that I am working from, and my project so far:

Thank you for your input!!

Hello in Cheyenne , Wyoming. That is lovely and such wonderful colors too. I've only made one runner and not nearly as pretty. Good work!!

If you piece your binding on the diagonal you will never notice that it is pieced. I would also piece the side borders on the diagonal. The quilting might even disguise the seam. Your colors are very pretty.

Do you mean to cut the binding on the bias?
I'm a bit confused...

Or do you mean to piece it like I would piece bias binding?

For the piecing, I think it is least noticeable done on the diagonal and Irregularly offset from the middle. Definitely not in the center! I would do irregular thirds so no piecing join is exactly opposite another.

I would piece it with diagonal seams and make sure they are not right across from each other- your runner is turning out just beautifully!

All your answers have been so very helpful! Over the course of the next couple of weeks I hope to have it finished, at least in time for Thanksgiving. It will have only about 5" clearance from the top of the ceiling, and 5" from the bottom of the wall over the stairs. Not much room for error!
Thank you all for your contributions. Matty

I agree with the others, both that the runner is beautiful and about bias binding. However, 96" is only 8 feet, so if you have a 9 foot ceiling you have a little wiggle room.

I don't think it's necessary to cut the binding on the bias for this quilt. I mean to make the joins on the diagonal rather than straight across. It's visually less noticeable that way, and also has less bulk so the seam lays flatter.

I understand now. Thank you!
