French Knots instead of yarn?
 

Has anyone ever "tied" a quilt using french knots instead of yarn? I want to make a quilt for my niece, she is getting married in July. My quilting skills just aren't good enough for a nice quilt. I wonder if I could use ribbon and make french knots. Has anyone done this successfully?

The french knots may be a bit uncomfortable when cuddling with the quilt. If you don't want to use the yarn you can use crochet thread or even machine tie it. To machine tie you make little bar tacks instead of tying the knots.

I use embroidery floss and the last one I did, I used all 6 strands, put green on the top and made sure it went thru on the back because the back was a pink sheet and then I used pink emb floss on the back. I think I washed that at least ten times already. It still looks like new.

I think embroidery floss works better than ribbon. The ribbon may work itself free. I just tie square knots.

I say go for it! I once saw a beautiful Kaffe Fassett quilt that had been tied with French knots, and fell in love with it immediately. I've wanted to try it on a quilt ever since.

so, how would you accomplish this? Bring the ribbon up from the back, make your French knot, then tie it off on the back?

I put some French Knots on a baby blanket once because I thought it would look totally cool as a design element, but they did kind of stick up and feel weird. It did not turn out as well as I had hoped. Maybe try it on something small first and see how you like how it turns out.

Ive used ribbon, tacked a knot in middle to keeo from coming undone, used embroidery thread also, yarn all came out cute, even used different stitches off sewing machine!
