French Roses Question
 

Have any of you made this quilt without cutting out the backs of each flower as the patterns says? I have seen tutorials which look like that have not. Would this make it too heavy? If any of you have made this block without cutting out the backs I would appreciate your commenting on the results. Thank you. Dixie

I haven't made the French roses quilt but I love it! It's on my bucket list but am working on too many higher priority projects currently. I'll be watching here though to see what kind of answer you get.

I've done a similar pattern, with fewer layers. It isn't quilted yet, but my old machine had issues stitching down 4 layers of fabric and 3 layers of fusible. It was a UFO for years until it tried it out with my new dsm and it had no issues at all with all those layers.

Well, I haven't made that particular quilt, but I've done my share of applique, and I think you're better off cutting the backs out. Try a sample block - cut scraps, sew them together, put it on a 12" block and see what you think. :thumbup:

I agree with Peckish. Spending a bit of time and some scraps now would be a good idea to be able to see and feel how heavy the block would be.

I made this quilt sometime ago. I think I cut out the backs. I Stitched around the edges and made them like a rag edge. It came out great.

Thanks for the replies. I think I will try to make a sample block using scraps to see what method I want to use. I want to make a table runner using this patterns. Wish me luck!

Quilt in a Day forum had a swap years ago. I joined the swap and got mine hand quilted last winter. I love it. We machine, raw edge appliqued each layer of the rose. We trimmed the back on each layer of the rose. It needs to be trimmed since the finished rose would be thick and hard to quilt. I haven't used my quilt yet, but am told when it's washed the raw edges ruffle and become soft. This pattern is still online on several sites.. Google French rose quilt pattern and you will find it including pictures. Some are free.
