Frustration with block letters

I need your skilled artists eyes to help me figure out how to fix this quilt. There are two problem areas that I see, both at the bottom of the U. The right side I believe I have figured out how to fix, but the left has me stymied. I have double checked and my quilt matches the pattern, but the perspective just isn't right. Does anyone else see the problems or is it just me? DH is of no assistance, so I am asking all of you! Thanks in advance as I know someone out there will have the fix for me.

how were you going to change the right side, if I may ask?

Buckeye Rose 04-06-2014 10:39 AM

This is so hard to describe....where the horizontal line of the U comes across to the right and angles up, I am going to change the HST that is red/wine to red/cream, the next square to the right needs to be all cream, and the next square up that is all wine needs to be wine/cream. I hope I explained that well enough.

if the light is coming from the top left corner, then there needs to be some shadows on the 'roofs' of the bottom row of units.

Here is a pic of the fix on the right and area on the left that I need help with

It looks like the left part of the U is in front of the I and the right part of the U is behind it. I think the designer managed to torque the shapes so much that they won't look realistic, but anyone from Indiana would know what it is anyway. (I didn't know - but I figured it out.) Looks kind of Escher-esque to me.

I would try rotating that HST. 90 degrees to the right. Or it might just need to be all the light color. I would make a duplicate HST and try different orientations before taking it all apart.

This isn't the best drawing.

It should be more like this for the shading to be correct.
Apologies for the bad drawing and writing.

Good luck with this. Way to complicated for me!

Well if you can't figure it out and decide you don't like it, send it to me. My dd is an IU graduate and would love to have it. I'm not good with visual dimensions such as you describe. Sorry, but it looks great to me.

It looks great to me also. But if it's bugging you, I think Rodney has an answer. His drawing is very good in describing what he thinks it needs. I think QuiltnNan is right about the bottom shadowing. It would be more realistic. And I think what you drew would make the right side correct. So you have it fixed, right? I think so. Don't we have great quilters here to help us when we need it? I want to thank you all for helping Buckeye Rose. Next time it might be me.

I would let it alone. My mother used to say, "You are going to fix it until you ruin the whole thing," which frequently turned out to be the case. It is a beautiful design, well executed as it is. froggyintexas
