the size you make would depend on how much of a drop you want on the sides and bottom and if you want to tuck some under the pillow.

It depends on how long you want the over hang...if you want an overhang "standard full" is 78" X87".... You would add the overhang and pillow tuck to that

It use to be in the "olden days" that mattresses were all the same size and thickness.

I would suggest to measure the bed that the quilt is going to be made for. There is NO exact size for a quilt since quilts are made from several different sizes pf blocks. I made a queen size Double Irish Chain for my best friend and she wanted the overhand to be longer so it actually ended up being a king size quilt.

It depends on how thick your mattress is. I make a king and it just covers the mattress, but my mattress is a 18 inch one. This does not count the box spring.
