Hi- I'm new here. I just completed my first Fun and Done quilt. I will try to upload a picture if I can. :-)

I sent for the templates "Batting Buddy," and used them to cut out the backing, batting, and centered with them.

It went pretty well. I used glue stick on my batting to help hold it in place. The Elmer's glue stick worked the best. Then I bought one from the Dollar Tree and that didn't hold good. I had to rip out and redo a few blocks as they were way off center. Anyone else had that experience?

I didn't have a walking foot, so just sewed the rows together with my zipper foot. (I used that one because I could see better where it was stitching.) I used a zig zag stitch. Here is my question: How do you get an even zig zag stitch? Mine were all over the place and bunched up and did a lot of stitches in one spot at times. I also had to pull on the fabric a lot to get it to move. At least I used a color of thread that didn't show too much. Would a walking foot cure these two problems?

I didn't have a pattern so just made one up. I think it is called strip quilting? It turned out to be 45"X60." What would that be called? A lap quilt?

I'd like to do another one but would like my seams where I joined the blocks and rows to look smoother and nicer.

I know there is a lot of experienced quilters on here and I'd like some advise.

Also, don't know what to name this quilt. Any ideas?

Thanks.
Bonlou

Wow - I really like that!

Pamkasperi said exactly what I was going to say! I love the colors and how you arranged them. Great job!

A walking foot would help with the bunching.

Your zigzagging was probably uneven because of the zipper foot. If you had the foot far enough from where you wanted to stitch so the needle couldn't hit it, then it was too far to hold the fabric in place. Do you have an embroidery foot - a wider opening so you can see what's going on, but still have the fabric controlled? Otherwise, use the regular foot.

Like the quilt. The colors are lovely.

That looks great. A walking foot does help. I have done some fun and Done items at my quilting group. We all had some traveling of the materials, so that at the end the blocks did not line up perfect. The quilt shop told us most people have some uneveness. Now I make just the top and add sewing allowances, if I like the pattern. Afterwards I add the batting and backing.

I can't help with your questions but I really like your quilt. Great job.

Very cute quilt!!!!! Do you have, and can you use, a walking foot with this pattern? That helps a lot to keep fabrics from shifting. Nice job!

Looks like you did a very good job considering some of the little set backs you had. I love the colors you used and placement of the blocks.

Thanks Tinabodina, (like that name!) I've been thinking about this for a few days now. Do you know the Fun and Done method of quilting? I used that. As for the pattern I made that up myself. So, if you'd like me too I can try to write it down for you. Just let me know. ;-)

I don't know how to help you, I am not that experienced. I do however love the colors and the quilt looks great!

No, what is the Fun and Done method?

Treasureit 03-26-2011 07:43 AM

Nice Job - sure you are a beginner?

okiepastor 03-26-2011 07:46 AM

Do a search for Fun and Done in this board and you will see what it is. I can't explain it except that it is a quilt as you go method and is fairly easy. That was my first try and I'll try another soon.

:-)

Yes I am! :-) Hope to do more soon! I liked this one because it did not take me too long to make it.

No I didn't. I'm not sure if I can do that on my machine. I'll have to check. I don't think with this method it would be necessary. I'm new at this so maybe I'm wrong about that.

I think it is wonderful! Only you will notice any small boo-boos. They add character, anyway! I love your color choices. Very soothing to my eyes.
