Fun project for 2018
 

What would be a fun project for our small quilt group, of ten women, to do this year?? We meet weekly at my house. And are looking for ideas of what others do as a group.
We did a shoe box quilt last year and that was fun. The year before we did a mystery quilt. So something along those lines would be great. Any ideas would be very much appreciated.

how about string blocks, maybe with the same fabric kite center... usually makes a stunning quilt and will help with all those scraps we seem to have.

There are eight ladies in my group, one year we decided to make a "house" quilt and swap blocks with each other. So I made 8 blocks with the same pattern but colours that I thought each person would like and added embellishments. A few people asked for one colour sky and they gave each of us a piece, I decided to give everyone a piece of the grey mottled fabric to include a small piece at least in each of the blocks. It was fun, one lady made an outhouse, one lady a log cabin; one has 3 birdhouses in it; one is a barn, one is an old school; the bottom row has quilt shops. The ninth block we got our group picture and transferred it to fabric and I appliquéd our little logo of a ladybug crawling out of a thimble. This would be my suggestion to, as it is on my list to make and I love using up my strings.

Another year we decided to make blocks for each other. We each chose what pattern and colours we wanted; then we chose names to see who would go first, etc. I chose the Jewel Box pattern in greens, reds, lights -- all scrappy. Here is a picture of mine. [ATTACH=CONFIG]585941[/ATTACH]

One lady chose the Dresden Plate, so when it was her turn we all made blocks for her. We decided how large of a quilt we would make and then asked for that many blocks from our friends. We all made large quilts.

On a slightly different note. The group I just joined, all the ladies have Singer Featherweights so they each made a quilted carrying case for them last year. I just saw the pattern the other day but I can't remember where.

One of the groups I am in is doing a traveling quilt...each person started with a theme and a notebook about what kind of quilter they are...modern/traditional and colors they enjoy etc... We each made our first block and then passed it onto the next person. It has been a lot of fun to see what has been created each month to the quilts and it has been a great way to get to know the group.

Jmoore-That's what the shoe box quilt thing is all about. We each picked a focus fabric, then 3 coordinates, put them in a box with our name on it and passed it around. Each person in our group made a 12 1/2" block of their choice to put in the box . In the end you get all these unique blocks, made by your friends, with the colors You chose. Now we are looking to do something different, but similar as it was Sew much fun.

Our small group at a shop met monthly and made quilts for a local homeless shelter. They always need twin size comforters. So, if you picked a specific pattern that perhaps builds skills, it is a win-win.

I agree the slice quilts are a lot of fun.

We did that too about 3 yrs ago-(made wheelchair quilts) we also made 72 pillowcases for donating.every yr our group makes charity items at Christmas. I was looking more for something we could do for each other

My former guild did something like the slice quilt. It was called a river runs thru it. We all made a block. We were given the river fabric. We were told where the river should enter and exit the quilt. Other than that we did whatever we wanted. It was something like this. The group I belonged to before moving did block exchanges several times a year with everyone making the same block and and exchanging them. We also worked on doing projects such as wheelchair blankets or gowns for pediatric heart surgery patients. It was a lot of fun.

Here's something interesting I found at a Guild show in Anchorage, AK. It's called A Garden Party. Participants were asked to bring in an assortment of pre-fused fabrics. They were given one hour to create flowers in a vase from their supplies. The project was slice in quarters, and participants were asked to trade with three different people, keeping one section of their own. Homework was to bring the pieces together by using thread play, embellishments and more fusing. Participants done by the next meeting received a prize. You would not believe the results. Amazing!

I did this by myself, but it can be done by a group. Each person can be responsible for a row.

Our local shop has a sew in night every month. One year they did a pizza party, were supplied with new, clean pizza boxes (kind of like the shoebox idea) and brought their own fabric for a quilt. They drew numbers and passed the boxes to the next number (one gave her box to two, etc) that person made a center square of whatever size they chose. Then the next month the box was passed to the next number and that person added a border (could be pieced or not), etc. At the end the quilt was finished or nearly so. I think they were able to add additional fabrics if they wanted. The recipient got to see it at each meeting, but had no input! Every one was pleased!

there are so very many fun things for a group to do but 2 that I enjoyed the most took creativity and lots of thinking one was a round robin you make the center block and then it goes around to each member to add a border your choice if to add fabric or they use their own another was to take a word or group of words and make a quilt fitting to those words all was kept secret until our final meeting with a pot luck those were both so much fun

I am liking the Round Robin idea & using our own fabrics. It seems when others add to it, sometimes is not what you would choose. (if you know what I mean). Anyone else have input on a round robin quilt? Thanks you guys for all your ideas so far. This is fun

Looking for quilts other than donation (we do this already) or 1 quilt made buy the whole group. More interested in ideas similar to the Round Robin or shoe box ideas if possible. Thanks again. You guys are awesome.

I just wanted to say hi to you from the city of reno. I enjoy taking a drive out there once in a while just to see what all is happening to the growth of the city.
You might talk to some of the gals who are members of the truckee meadows quilt guild. (They have a web site with all the numbers for conacting them) Many of them are also members of small groups cottage style. They are really nice ladies, and I bet they would give you a few ideas too. You could visit the day time group as a day trip easily and who knows, maybe have time for shopping the fabric stores too. Just a suggestion ...

I love thinmblebug's house block idea. That would be a blast and the quilts would so beautiful, like the one she's showing on thread. Course, some don't care for appliquing. There are so many neat and creative ideas on the swap thread, too, you could try with your group.

We picked a focal fabric and a sampler pattern. Everyone had to use the focal fabric someplace in the quilt. The rest of the fabrics each person picked their own. It was amazing the different looks we got. Our biggest problem was the sampler pattern we chose was from an older book and not always easy to follow. It was a big learning challenge for me as I had never done a desdan or Y seams.

I didn't know what a shoe box quilt was. So was glad you explained. It sounded like it would have been a wonderful surprise to receive back.

Love that " house " quilt idea. One yr. a group of us did a row quilt. Each started with a first riw, and a note about theme and colour...then it went to the next person who added second row...we all did this ( a row robin?). In the end we all had unique quilts with themes & colours we liked. Most were horizontal rows, but mine was vertical.

I'm fairly new (this month) to the board and discovered the "Member Swap" thread from the Forum menu. I joined the Summertime 2018 block swap and I'm having a ball....plus I'm meeting some awesome people and will have their beautiful work in my future quilt. That would be a fun group project and you'd have a fun quilt at the end of it. Here is the link to swap thread that has dozens of ideas...
