Goodwill sometimes has old fur coats that you can harvest the fur from. That way, no new critters need to be harmed for a cozy fuzzy jacket. (I got some from there for teddy bears. the left over fur can be donated to your local wildlife rehabilitator for comforting little orphan bunnies or squirrels.) That, or they have some pretty nice soft fake furs available that are alot more wildlife friendly! :)

Salvation Army, GoodWill, I've seen furs and leathers there. Most of the GoodWill leathers/furs go for about 20 dollars here, but may vary in other places. Try them before putting out lots of $$ on other sites.
As for warmth, I used to live on a cattle ranch and most of the cowboys there wore denim jackets with sheep fleece linings. That's a natural product and easy to find. Try a little digging for whatever is warmest. And I think there is a batting that is supposed to be as almost as warm as goose down. If nothing else, get an old sleeping bag made for sub zero weather and sew that in his jacket!! I hope his jacket is on the large size on him!!
