Fused Applique Question
 

I've only tried applique once and that was a while ago. I know that one must be careful when picking the color of thread for the edges of the applique pieces.

If you don't have a perfect match of thread to fabric, should you pick a color that is slightly lighter or slightly darker than the fabric to make it blend better? I can't remember!!!

Have you ever picked one thread to outline all of your pieces instead of changing colors?

Some people use black for all their appliques. I prefer to match the background of the applique piece I am going around. If it is close, I use it. If I don't have a good match, I would usually go darker rather than lighter if my fabric color is in between my thread colors.

The "rule" is go darker with the thread but I break all the rules. I use the color I think would work best for what I'm trying to say.

I agree with sunnye, sometimes contrast.ie. pink flower yellow thread. Or something to make it pop. This is your quilt, your idea, and what you want. The only rule is you have a good time.

What is the difference in blanket stitching and satin stitching? They sound the same to me. :o

Here is a picture of some of the applique that I need to sew down. Do you think gray thread would look okay? What color would you choose?

Thanks morelcabin! Those videos were just what I needed to see. I planned on using satin stitching on this piece, but those videos are great references. :)

Falling back on a counted cross stitch trick, most CC design outlining is done in a very dark brown. It's not quite as "in your face" as black can be.

Love your piece - so cute. I like them to match as close as possible but I use rayon embroidery thread so it 'pops' a little. I've seen the black done and it's very effective.
I had a close look at my avatar quilt and would say, on balance, where there's not been an exact match, I've gone slightly lighter. This may because of the type of thread I use. I also prefer blanket stitch as I find it much easier and not so dense on the small pieces.
