Hello There Folks, Just a fast question on fusible applique....Everytime I do fusible applique and try to satin stitch the edges, the fabric always frays on the edge of the applique. I've always heard that you can machine blanket stitch the edges, but does that old well through washings on a regular quilt????

I love the look of applique but so far I'm a piecer girl.

I use fray-check onthe edges, then if I use a blanket stitch or more decorative stitch, any exposed threads will not unravel. I prefer the looser designs to the rigid satin stitches, and you use a lot less thread.

Thank you! That's a cool idea. I wish I'd thought of that several quilts ago!

Hi Wendy

When you are making your applique pieces you need to draw them on the fusible, cut out AROUND the outside of the shape, iron it onto the fabric, then cut ON the line of the applique. This way the sticky is all the way to the edge of the shape. This cuts down on fraying.

My daughter was having a fraying problem with applique and I found out she was cutting the shape out of the fusible and then ironing it onto the fabric and cutting the fabric.

I hope this helps too.

Whoo. Fray check. I never would have thought of that on my own. I love this site. I learn something new every day.

I use FRAY BLOCK rather than fray check. Fray block does not leave the "hard, stiff" feel and accomplishes the same thing. Joann's carries both...so buy with coupon :)
