Fusible Web and Applique

I am using Pellon EZ Steam for raw edge appliqué (cotton to cotton). Do I have to use stabilizer when appliquéing to the main fabric. Thanks

Where are you planning to add the stabilizer? Behind the main fabric? What type of stitch are you planning to use on the applique pieces?

I am making a small wall hanging and did not add stabilizer. I used a small zig zag stitch instead of satin or blanket stitches.

I thought no stabilizer since it was not a big deal with zigzag but someone said you should always use a stabilizer. I thought i didn’t need one but figured I wold ask!LOL

I have found that I always need stabilizer, particularly with the zigzag stitch.

I use wonder under or steam n seam and don't use stabilizer...sturdy enough to stitch around with each of those. I use diff stitches...blanket or one of my decorative stitches from my sewing machine.

When I was making the Affairs of the Heart quilt, I experimented doing them with and without stabilizer, and liked doing it with stabilizer so much better - but that has a lot of tight curves and I was doing satin stitching. I do find that with stabilizer underneath, I can get smoother curves as it helps to reduce the traction of the feeddogs.

This is a great question. I didn’t on my first project. But now I’m ready to do something larger and with many tight corners and curves, I like the idea of adding stabilizer. Thanks!

I think stabilizer helps keep everything smooth. I like using it.

Thanks for the advice. I tried both on scraps and felt the stabilizer was better.
