Garage sale find.. need your help

1 Attachment(s)
I found another treasure at a garage sale the bag was dated June 1942. It was in an old trunk of things. Marked $1. To my surprise there were 45 hand pieced quilt blocks. Of course I grabbed them up. The block is one that I am unfamiliar with. It is very nicely pieced. The background is unbleached muslin. They look like they have been untouched since they were stored away and are in good shape.
My plan is to make the intended quilt out of the blocks. I am thinking of putting a 1 1/2" shashing between the blocks. Each block is 8 1/2" unfinished. Or maybe group them together side by side then add a couple boarders to the outer sides of the quilt. On the slim possibility that I need to make a few more blocks to get the size quilt I want it would be nice to know what the block is called and obtain a copy of the pattern. One of my weak points it re-creating a pattern. I do appreciate you help. Here is a pic of one of the blocks.

It looks like it could be vintage Daisy Pinwheel blocks. Some versions have the center and some don’t. Whatever you decide to do with them, they deserve a rescue!

Iceblossom 07-04-2019 07:05 AM

That would be easy to draft out if needed.

Are all the centers green?

I think a standard sashing would be one very appealing way to put it together but I believe it would also be likely to have alternate plain blocks, probably basic muslin but potentially solid colors or even prints (less likely) with heavy quilting between them.

It's part of the problem for us today, the patterns back then usually didn't go too much into details like layout and such. Just a block pattern in black and white and a few suggestions to go on. So honor the blocks but keep true to yourself.

Grats on the find! It's so exciting when it happens.

My niece found a set of vintage scrappy churn dash blocks at a garage sale and asked if I could put them together. Unfortunately this set wasn't very well done, so I started with sashing each one with a solid border in assorted colors that looked good with each block. Then I trimmed them all to the same size squares. I sashed with unbleached muslin and really like the way they turned out.

QuiltnNan 07-04-2019 07:19 AM

i don't know the name, but I like the idea of sashing them... like every one is framed, because they are a treasure

bearisgray 07-04-2019 07:22 AM

I wonder if those fabrics were washed first.

Some of muslins shrink a lot!!!!!!!!

zozee 07-04-2019 07:24 AM

Wait---did you find the whole trunk and lot for $1, or was each block $1?

juliasb 07-04-2019 07:37 AM

The whole lot was a dollar. These 45 block were one of the best finds in a very long time. There were many items in the trunk I picked up a couple feed sacks ($2.00 each). I did a lot of looking but only purchased these 3 items.

juliasb 07-04-2019 07:39 AM

They feel like the muslin was prewashed. I don't feel any kind of sizing and many of the blocks are quite wrinkled. I have pressed them once already. With the age of the blocks however look and feel could be deceiving.

Jordan 07-04-2019 07:43 AM

You certainly did find a treasure and all for a $1. Very nice quilt blocks and you could make a pretty good size quilt with 45 blocks. Especially if you put some sashing in between the blocks. Very lucky find.

I was thinking about drafting out the pattern. At the most I would only need I think I would only need another 11 blocks to make a nice size quilt. The centers are all different. I just layed out a group of the blocks on the carpted floor to get an idea of what it might look like with sashing between the blocks. This is about 1/2 the blocks.

QuiltnNan 07-04-2019 08:02 AM

yes, I like that layout!

osewme 07-04-2019 09:42 AM

What a great garage sale find.

I found this pattern but it makes a 12 1/2" unfinished block:

I can re-size the block so it will work. It might take me a bit of time but I am sure I can eventually do it.

K-Roll 07-04-2019 10:23 AM

Thanks for sharing these, they're wonderful.

juliasb 07-04-2019 10:29 AM

Someone put a lot of work into these back during WWII. I want to be so careful putting them into a quilt that I will also treasure.

betthequilter 07-04-2019 12:09 PM

What a wonderful treasure you found. I'm sure you'll make a beautiful quilt.

Libster 07-04-2019 12:56 PM

What a wonderful find! Please post a picture of your quilt when you get it finished.

Danny 07-05-2019 05:36 AM

They are a wonderful find! Have you thought of putting them on point to make them go further? Just a thought.

trolleystation 07-05-2019 05:58 AM

Lucky you...what a treasure trove.

I would still be jumping up and down if I had found those! I am so happy for you!

nanna-up-north 07-05-2019 07:15 AM

What a fabulous find. I, too like the sashing. I think that's what the maker would have done back in the day. Do enjoy the journey. You'll have quite the treasure when it's done.

PS: Do wash it in some cool water and Retyne the first time. Some of those old fabrics might bleed, especially the reds.

juliasb 07-05-2019 07:30 AM

I am working on my first sample block right now. So far so good. I will post it when it is finished. I was thinking I could use the blocks I make as corner pieces with the boarders would make a nice finish. I am hoping I do not have to put any of my own block in the main body of the quilt.

cfuzzy 07-05-2019 09:09 AM

Those blocks are lovely. Looking forward to seeing your finished quilt.

Looks like the Kansas City Star block called Daisy Pinwheel. It sure is fun to find such treasures and see what the fabric was like "back in the day".

Mariah 07-05-2019 12:14 PM

How lucky can you get!! It will be beautiful. Wish I could get lucky and find something that pretty and the blocks all done!!

Mariah

juliasb 07-05-2019 12:36 PM

That is the pattern I am using, the Daisy Pinwheel. I have excluded the circle in the middle so that I can alway recognize any blocks that I made to complete this quilt.

barny 07-05-2019 01:43 PM

Oh, Julia, you have made a gorgeous block. You need to sometime make a quilt of your own in those fabrics. I love it.

Jules51 07-05-2019 03:15 PM

Great find! I like the idea of sashing them. Please post pic when finished!

Gay 07-05-2019 04:03 PM

Love this version with the background of many fabrics, from another post this morning.

You could use a photocopier to reduce a 12" block to the 8" of your blocks (reduce to 66 - 67%).

A pattern with instructions is found here: http://charisecreates.blogspot.com/2...age-block.html

PAKate 07-06-2019 06:25 AM

Check out Fons and Porter Love of Quilting Sept/Oct 2015 Fond Memories. Looks exactly the same. Good luck.

Jordan 07-06-2019 06:41 AM

Your block turned out very nice. You are very inventive and creative. Can't wait to see how you finish your new adventure.

wildyard 07-06-2019 08:04 AM

Your block is great and how wonderful to have this bit of history to preserve with your skills. I have a few old blocks, but not enough to make into a quilt. I also have some vintage pieces that are cut but not sewn into their blocks. Maybe I'll pull them out and see what I can do with them. Thanks for inspiring me!

running1 07-06-2019 09:31 AM

Oh how lovely!! I hope you can find the pattern you need.... it will be beautiful!!!

quiltedsunshine 07-06-2019 05:32 PM

Here's a pattern for an 8-inch block: https://www.stylishfabricsandquilts....rsary-patterns Scroll down to block #20.

Jingle 07-06-2019 05:56 PM

The old blocks are very pretty. Your block is gorgeous in those colors. applied to an off white square would make it even so much more. You are very lucky and talented.
