Garment Bag

I am making a garment bag for my son who is in the seminary. Would you recommend just sewing 2 pieces of fabric together or sewing 2 pieces of fabric together with thin quilt batting in between? It is for his cassock and surplice. I am allowing extra space for future expansion of other garments in addition to the ones named above.

I have Vera Bradley garment bag from way back and it, of course, is quilted. I have used it for moving lots of bride's maids dresses around. I like the quilting because it adds another layer of protection to the items inside. One wedding was a constant downpour but the dresses never got wet.

Just MHO.

I personally would use a thin batting, just to make it sturdier and nicer. Not sure if any of his items would also need the extra protection the batting would provide

Thanks~ the lady at WM recommended a fusible batting.

Sounds like you got some great advice. I'd love to see it when you're finished!!

I would use batting, but I have heard nothing good about the fusible batting. It can be hard to stitch through. There was a post about it recently - http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...d-t200543.html

I'd suggest making the inside with a slippery fabric (think lining, taffeta, etc.).
If you use a cotton, then the garments stick to it, and harder to keep all hanging properly. And harder to work with as you put garments in and out.

Quilting would add more bulk and weight ... and yes, would provide more protection. Back to the lining suggestion, perhaps use a nylon rainproof fabric for both inner and outer fabrics?

From a design vantage, you might want to consider a gusset all the way around to allow for expansion rather than what is hung in there being compressed and thus more likely to wrinkle.

Another suggestion would be to add a separate pocket at the bottom that smaller items could be put in, and not be floating around in the main bag. I have one bag like this, and depending on the situation, sometimes I keep shoes in there. Other times, lingerie, pantyhose, small purse, etc. Sometimes it holds a few toiletries that I might need.
