Gaven's Tying Needle- Anyone know where to get these?
 

The only two quilts I've ever made I tied...mostly because I like the look. I was on youtube the other day and saw this gal using this HANDY DANDY tying needle, and I emailed her, but got no response. Does anyone know if these are available for sale?

I have never seen it but a good quilt shop on line should have it - try Nancy's notions.

She says in the comments that her uncle designed the needle and they were trying to get it produced..that was a year ago, so not sure it can be bought.

Did you find this needle yet? I have one and it came in a package of heavy duty upholstery type needles. I don't know if Joann's has them but you should be able to get one at an upholstery shop. PM me if you can't find one and I will check and see if I have an extra.

I use a large curved"Tapered" Needle. I got this needle form the Veterinarian's office. At the time I was working in my husbands Vet practice. It makes a Dandy needle for tying quilts.

could you show a picture of this needle, i help the ladies at the local VFW make lap quilts and they tie all the quits, so these needles would help alot. thank-you.

I just tied my first quilt and I got curved needles at Joann's or Hancock Fabrics. They are from Dritz quilting and they are called "Curved Needles for Tying Quilts" I didn't see them on the Joann's site but I found a link to them on Amazon.

I notice the needle on Youtube is different than the above picture (which looks like an ordinary curved upholstery needle that is just being called a "quilt" needle. The tieing needle in the video has more of a bend and it's closer to the tip--for slipping into the quilt and immediately back to the top----making a short stitch that is almost automatic. Have you googled for the needle by the name the girl gives it? Looks really interesting. Tho I have never tied quilts, this might be a new finish for me! Let us know if you ever find it.

Could you take one of the larger curved needles and put a "bend" in it?

I have also seen them at WalMart....if they have a fabric dept.

I think an upholstery needle would work just as well & you can buy them any place you can buy needles.

I've never seen these either. The one I use is a curved needle that come in a pkg of household needles. I get mine at walmart.

Don't know if this has already been said or not, but Wal Mart has a package of upholstery needles that has a half circle needle that might do the trick for you. After I posted this, I saw the post just above me had the same message, sorry

This was posted here before. I received two of the needles when I emailed the person who was demoing them. I don't remember if it was the same person or video. I'll see if I can find the email address. The needles make tying so much easier and faster. They are not like the upholstery or curved needles you can buy in a package. She asked if I was right or left handed and if I wanted small or large size.
Well that was easy. The email was saved in my archives. :)

They are carpet or upholstery needles and can be bought at any Jo Ann's or even Wal Mart.

I purchased a needle similar to this at the Dollar General. Mine is curved and I have used it for years. They were in the sewing supply section, in a packet of needles used for home repair . The product name was Penn. Had several types of needles for repairing items. They cost a dollar. I haven't looked for one for awhile, so I don't know if they still have them or not. I think they were used to repair carpets and etc. Hope this helps others to purchase one. Deanie

I don't think some of the 'posters' are looking at the video and seeing that her needle is very different from the half circle needle used for upholstery....hers has a short ''bend'' very near the point. Looks like it would work easier than the curved needles. I used a curved one for basting quilt layers once, but almost had blisters on my fingers from trying to manipulate the turn (and basting is not as precise as tying)...the girl also states you can get left or right hand. If she'd offer them on this board, I betcha she'd sell quite a few! But I'm first in line, so fall in behind me!!

I tie quilts for my church all the time and the ones that I "LOVE" are called Chenille needles. they have a big eye but they have a sharp point unlike tapestry needles.

Those needles would be good for tying comforters. I don't tie quilts, just comforters.

No they are different. I have the needles to compare.

Those needles are awesome..You can buy them at Wall-Mart...That is where I got mine years ago...

mermaid has it right; the needles that Apryl is using in the vid are specially curved on the end (specific to left- or right-handed use), and are not usual & customary upholstery/quilting needles. I have googled all forms of "Gaven's needle" and Apryl (whatsherface) to no avail.
If they are not available for sale, perhaps a regular curved needle could actually be bent successfully.

I did receive an email from Apryl so she is /was real for one time. LOL

I've seen them at JoAnn's and Hobby Lobby.

Looks like you need to put several bends in it rather than the long single curve others are posting about. Good luck.

I have one that I've used for years. But I bought it when I was upholstering things and that's where I bought it from. Might try upholstering items. Just a thought.

I don't know how anyone found her email to begin with. There doesn't seem to be any way of emailing her from the YouTube video. There IS an Apryl Callaway on FB however, maybe that's a good place to start.

Check out the site from 'BeckyOK' & scroll down to make your own. Haven't tried it but it looks easy-peasy.
