Gel pens for marking quilts

I recently learned there are gel pens made by Pilot and are called Frixion pens. They have a fine point and are perfect for marking when using a stencil or any other type of marking. It will not say so on the description of the pens but when you are ready to get rid of your markings all you need to do is lightly press with an iron and the markings go completely away. The pens come in several colors and I purchased mine at Staples for $7.50 for a package of 3 different color pens.

The marks go away with heat, BUT depending where you live or if you will be shipping your quilt anywhere by plane, cold makes the marks reappear.

I have been hearing a lot about them and since I live in the north and the winters are so cold....I don't think this would be a good choice. I would love to hear what others are using to mark their quilts. I am going to be using templates and have been taking classes...I am still very nervous about marking my quilts. I have used chalk but it really does not show well.

I guess I won't use them until after they are sold for 20 years...
In another thread I already told about my experience with those purple pens that disappear after hours/days: I used it on some quilts 30 years ago, and about 15 years later it became clear that the invisible residu had slowly eaten away the fabric.

Good question to ask your Long Arm Quilter is what do they use to mark the quilts if anything. I am going to make some samples with the pens but will most likely use chalk for the real quilts.

Use them all the time. They are iron Off but come back, if needed, when they get cold (in the freezer) Did you know that?

I use Frixion pens for all markings. I love them. I never worry about the markings coming back even though I live in cold country. I don't plan on putting my quilts in the freezer or outside in the snow.

I only use the Frixion pens on areas that won't show like for marking half square triangles. For quilting designs, I use the purple air eraser, pounce chalk or the Bohn white marker. I also will use the blue washable marker but mainly only on my quilts because I know I will wash them. If you just spritz the blue marks with water, they can come back so I don't use on customer quilts.
