Gender Neutral?

A coworker of mine is going to have her first baby and we're not sure whether it will be a boy or a girl yet. Because I generally take forever to get anything done, I figured it would be a good idea to start sooner rather than later, which left me deciding on how to go gender-neutral for her quilt.

I asked her about her favorite colors/themes and she said turquoise, blue, green, and BUGS! I've been working on taming scraps for the past few weeks, so I decided to go with a super-scrappy and use up some 2.5" squares. The bug fabric will be in the center of all squares (scraps inherited from a past coworker's mother) and I'll probably sash with a solid or tone-on-tone turquoise with cornerstones. That way I can surround the whole thing with a turquoise border. There will be 20 squares total.

Do you think this looks gender-neutral enough? Not too girl and not too boy?

Looking good!

I think it works! It doesn't scream little boy or little girl at me, just kids in general.

i think it is great

I think it looks great, but a bit on the boyish side.

Love it. The baby will, too.

Pretty fabric choices! They should work either way. If it turns out to be a girl you can always add some lace if you think it's not girly enough!

It is looking good. Looking forward to seeing how it ends up.

I think it leans a little more to a boy, but I really like it!

Well, we just found out that she's having a little boy! I'm glad I tended towards the "safe" of blues and greens. I agree that it looks a little more boy, especially now with the sashing going on, but it worked out in my favor. :)

Now I just need to finish it before Mr. Grady Wade J------- arrives!

I'm trying to plan one for a similar situation - a niece and her hubby expecting their first in August and don't plan to find out the sex. I asked about a nursury theme, nada, but they like animals, especially monkeys. Add to that, that I have almost no time to sew since I am going to be moving in June, so it has to be quick and easy! I have a yard of jungle animals in bright rainbow colors and a FQ pack of rainbow colored solids (small prints). I think I will make pinwheels with the solids and a white with bright dots, then alternate the pinwheels with squares of the focus fabric. Oh, and I found a flannel for the back that has a light green background with scattered jungle animals and rainbows.

It's so much easier if they just find out the gender ahead of time!

What a nice gift for her and the baby! It will be much appreciated.

Looks great to me--great baby quilt. No too boy or too girl!
