I also have had similar experiences. One in particular at one of the big box stores (a national chain). The end of the bolt was 2" longer than the cut that I wanted. I said I would take the additional 2" at no charge to keep them from having that small and scrap. The employee said "Oh, my boss says I cant do that". So, as a result I had her make the cut and left them with a 2" scrap that probably wound up in the trash can. I sure felt better.

I agree with many on this board - you should get what you pay for. However, that isn't the norm when you buy in most stores. I always "over buy" 1/2 to a yard. I figure it compensates for "those little opps I made a mistake" in life, and I put the extra in my stash. I can't always catch problems in material and I know that I can lose from 1-6 inches and never want to be caught short. I have overheard ladies in quilt stores many times say they bought exact yardage and made a mistake or the yardage in pattern wasn't quite right, etc. and then they couldn't get any more of that fabric.
Can't tell you how many times that my pieces of material stash has come in handy on different quilts. Actually, my avatar is made almost entirely from stash. I think I purchased 2 different colors in about 1/2 yard or 3/4 of yard - the rest of the top I had "left over" from other projects.

Quiltmaker and QuiltnCowgirl - I so agree with you both; many times I just cringe when I see how the gals at Jo Ann Fabrics measure the fabric. Yes, it's very important to stand right there and watch what is happening.
I, too, have a husband who sometimes get embarrassed, but then it his money as well as mine that is being spent! So be it.

I have to add that I find I don't buy fabric from Jo Ann's any more. I guess if they're so cheap in their cuts, maybe they scrimp where then can on fabric quality too... I do get all of my batting, interfacings and notions there, however.

I know what you mean and there is nothing wrong with asking them to remeasure after they have cut it to see if it is what you asked for and paying for.

I always do my best to watch very carefully how, what and where they cut. If it is not done properly I ask that it be redone and show them how if they are not sure. Sometimes the people cutting the fabric have not been shown how to to this properly.

Quiltmaker I too couldn't agree more with you on this issue.

Personally I can't understand why all these people out there don't make a collective stand against these large companies who have forgotten that it is the customer who keeps them in business.
We the people have the power to change things if we stand together collectively yet instead we all seem to whinge and moan about the price of fuel, the price of milk, bank fees or what ever yet do nothing else about it.

If collectively everyone boycotted one particular store for 1 day in protest at that stores actions then it would make a difference and send a very clear message, unfortunately people are either too short sighted or too self centred to do so as we all seem to be about convenience to "US" rather than fixing our bottom line so it isn't going to happen.

You should have seen the girl's face at JoAnns when I made her straighten a plaid fabic and recut the beginning to give me a full yard of usable plaid material! She could not understand why it mattered if the plaid lined up or not! It was priceless and I got my full yard of usable plaid fabric!

Yes, this has happened to me, all too frequently at JoAnn's. I returned the cut piece of fabric which they first remeasured & then proceeded to cut the correct length. I did email JoAnn's also to let them know that this happened. They wanted to know the store & would contact the manager but I told them what I did and not to bother. Then, I noticed just this week I went to JoAnn's to just get a 1/2yd & they measured the length on the folded edge but the salvage end was shorter than the edge they used to measure & cut. I did not speak-up,thinking this would be held against me. Yes, give me a kick!
Will I ever learn ??
