I am so lucky. The three girls that work the fabric at my local Wally know us so well (cause it's the only one left with fabric) that they are specially careful to check the beginning for a straight cut and add an extra inch at the end. We've got 'em trained.

A quick afterthought..... my Wally is re-designing its layout. They ARE NOT getting rid of their fabric. The word is that the new fabric layouts with pre-cut etc. is NOT making money. We told 'em so.

I try to keep an eye on the cutter, but its hard. I usually ask for at least 1/4 yrd. more than what I think I actually need. I usually cut something wrong myself and I know I'll need that extra little bit.

I watch closely, If I find flaws or stains when I get home Back we,the fabric and I,go to the shop, I am respectful but firm when I leave it is with what I paid for.....I also remind them of word of mouth advertisement if I get any flack from them.

usually at joann's, if you ask nicely that you notice it looks a little crooked and to please re-straighten it, they will comply and cut a tad (& i do mean a tad) over the requested amt. LOL

I recently bought some fabric for a craft project at Walmart, the person cutting was so careless the fabric was all puddled in front of her and she didn't even straighten it out. Annoyed wasn't the word for my reaction.

same here. i always gave a couple of inches extra. some of the managers did not like it, but i did it anyway.

I need to jump in on this simply to say that I buy much of my fabric from Hobby Lobby and they always (no matter who is on duty) pull at least 3 inches over before cutting my yard! I love them and appreciate that they do it ...unlike my LSQ and Hancock's where I'm not always sure.

I work in a quilt shop and we always cut extra on every piece so that no one is short. When I go to stores like Hancock and Joann's really watch the clerks because have been short or very crooked a number of times. I prefer my wide backs ripped as you always have a straight to measure from.
