A friend of mine has been giving me some very old material that had been stores in boxes in a barn and cellar, the material has different kinds of stains on them, like rust, water and old age stains, I don't want to wash the material and set these stains in deeper, if anyone can give me some ideals as to what to try on these stains I would really appreciate any help.
Thank

Hi, A friend of mine deals in old quilts. She put Biz in cold water in a bathtub. Lets it soak over night then wrings them out by hand . Lets it dry naturally..then if the stain are not gone . She will try it one more time. if it will come out it usually does then .As for the rust they have rust remover in some material stores to try.Sometimes lemon juice will help if it isn't too bad..After all this if you have a washing machine that has a very gentle cycle .Wash the material with a gentle soap in warm water...remember if it is still stain the warm water may set it for good..

Have you tried soaking it in OxyClean? I have had great sucess with it.

Also, there is this odd stain remover that I have found at the Dollar General. It is cheap. A friend told me about it and it has worked on several bad stains here. It is sort of pasty and you rub it on and let it sit before washing. The name is M30 stain remover.

well if there are a lot of spots to treat this probably won't be feasible but "Grandma's Magic Spot Remover" works very well but it's kinda pricey.
I use Biz for "Mother Nature" ggggrrrrrrrrrrrrr stains and it works pretty well. Good luck

Joann,
If you have small pieces of fabric that you are washing I would recommend a laundry bag. My sister does this and says there is very little tangling when all is done.
Lots of luck with those stains. May they all disappear before your eyes!

Joann, I use "Awesome" from the dollar store. Use it on our clothes, for cleaning etc. works really well and it is cheap!! :D

I think part of the trick is time. Some stains that will not soak out in 24 hours will be gone if given an extra night. I have restored discolored antique linens using a tablespoon of Cascade dishwasher soap, and a handful of borax in a 5 gallon bucket of water. It may fade some colors though.

I got 2 very old christening gowns & several old baby dresses that were in awful condition. They were stained & yellow. I went online & got these tips. If possible put a towel under whatever you are washing. This way, when you lift the item out of the water, the weight of the water is on the towel and not on the delicate fabric. I desolved OxyClean in very hot water and let the water cool down. I soaked the items for at least 24 hrs. but some things required longer soaking. When the items were clean I rinsed them well again using a towel under them. For white things I put them on a clean bath towel and put them in the sun for a couple of days. Be sure to turn them over so they are evenly sunned. These clothes came out beautifully with no damage to the fabric. I ironed them and have them stored in acid free paper. Good luck and I hope these tips work for you.
