GFG borders
 

I am going to make a miniature GFG quilt for a dollhouse, and I really want to not square off the borders - I want the borders to showcase the hexagons of the quilt.

Any ideas? Also, how should I do the backing?

Having ZERO experience at this, here are my thoughts:

Make the front as usual.

Back - have a rectangle piece of fabric, and do half hexagons via english paper piece, and sew them to the borders of the rectangle fabric to match the size of the front, then whipstitch them together inside out and birth the quilt to finish.

Any ideas? I'm flying blind here...

When I completed a GFG for my aunt, I googled GFG quilts and looked at the images. I got lots of ideas of different ways that people have finished their quilts off.

You could do it the same way a facing is done on a garment neck or sleeve. That is, lay out your top upside down on the right side of the backing (so "right sides together"), add batting as you like, stitch the seam along the edge of 3 sides and most of the 4th side, then trim the seam allowances on the backing/batting. You can "birth" it by turning right side out. You'd need to finish the last bit of the 4th side by hand.

I don't know if this will make sense but since the final product will be so small, I'd try birthing it with two pieces of backing. That way you can use a knitting needle or something to poke out your edges on each half and whip stitch up the middle of the backing.

I made one and appliquéd it on to a piece, trimmed to desired size. Layered as usual and quilted it. I don't like how it turned out. I would sew it like a pillowcase and turn it. Then you would have the beautiful shape of the hexies around the edges.
