I just started a diamond shapes GFG. My centres are white, I plan on making two of each jewel tone color. They seem small, I'll need at least a gizillion. Should I do two rows around my centre eg white centre with two rows of purple, then a row of green ( my pathway). Just got back from the Yuma quilt show. There was a vender there selling the plastic hexagons. Her diamonds had two rows around her centre. Her's were all different (scrappy).

I think 2 rows around the center would look good. Maybe make several pieces in purple and green and do a layout before you sew everything together. That may help you decide if 2 rows is perfect or too many. Yes, you will need a gizillion!!!! My GFG took over 1200 pieces!!!

The part of my GFG that covers the top of the queen guest bed, without counting the side borders or the bottom border, contains approximately 1,880, 1-inch hexes. I think that it'll contain twice that when it's complete. No wonder my eyes are going bad. ;)

When I did my GFG, I didn't want to be sewing a zillion pieces forever, so I made the pieces a little bigger than the traditional size, and it came out fine.

They sell the templates in sizes ranging from 1/4 inch up to 2 or 3 inches - I don't see why we can make them even larger. :)

I saw one somewhere that was 9 in"! That was a little too big for me.
