Gift for quilter

I need a idea. I want to make a thank you gift for a lady whom allowed me to use her long arm machine to quilt my MIL quilt. She didn't want me to pay her or even buy the thread but I want to do something. If anyone knows of good gift I could make a quilter that has everything.

dakotamaid 04-16-2013 07:28 PM

Gift certificate to her favorite quilt store....................

ArtsyOne 04-16-2013 07:33 PM

A bundle of fat quarters in colors you know she likes, or jelly roll or charm pack. You can never have too many of those in your stash.

erstan947 04-16-2013 07:39 PM

Maybe a gift certificate to a popular local restaurant.

Tartan 04-16-2013 09:43 PM

How about a gift certificate to a massage? I bet any longarmer could really use one of those.

omgtimmcgraw 04-16-2013 10:04 PM

All good ideas.

DOTTYMO 04-16-2013 10:42 PM

How about a thread catcher and pin holder to hang on machine. PM if you don't understand.

IrishgalfromNJ 04-17-2013 04:44 AM

Make her a pretty little teacup pin cushion.

booklady1952 04-17-2013 05:11 AM

Since it's spring, how about a hanging basket of flowers, patio pot of flowers, etc.? Does she like roses, hostas, succulents, etc.?

Murphy1 04-17-2013 06:07 AM

That is the best gift. It is what I would most appreciate. No quilter can have too much fabric and a gift card makes it free, plus she will think of you each time she uses it.

I always love when someone makes me a handmade gift instead of a gift certificate or a store bought gift. I think a pin cushion is a great idea! She will always think of you when she sees it or uses it. And lots of people will see it also.

michelleoc 04-17-2013 06:50 AM

I love the handmade gift idea as well.

DebbE 04-17-2013 08:25 AM

I'd do a gift basket, and fill it with things you know she likes. Tea, a beautiful tea cup, candles, fat quarter packs, threads, a really pretty frame, bath salts, gift certificates to her favorite quilt shop, restaurant, movie theater. I did that once for a woman I worked with that had been very kind to me -- and the look on her face was priceless. Then a few years ago, a group of folks did that for ME....and I was in tears at all the thought and care that went into that basket. I never forgot their kindness.

I like DebbE's idea but I would add the homemade pin cushion. Your gift will be a surprise to her and appreciated.

omgtimmcgraw 04-17-2013 09:04 AM

Wow all these ideas are great

AliKat 04-17-2013 09:50 AM

If you know her really well then a gift certificate to her favorite place, whether a restaurant or whatever is great. It is nice to have something else in our lives.

If you don't know her that well then a gift certificate to her favorite LQS would be great. She could use it however she wants: thread, needles, material, classes, or notions.

Nammie to 7 04-17-2013 05:47 PM

I would think she will appreciate anything you do for her. It is so nice to get a thank you occasionally!

LindaR 04-18-2013 05:08 AM

something homemade

tessagin 04-18-2013 06:59 AM

Ditto on the gift certificates to her favorite fabric store. Or you could also purchase some fabrics online then have it shipped to her. Everyone loves unexpected gift packages.

wendiq 04-18-2013 08:19 AM

I, too, like the handmade.....maybe a mug rug. If you're not into the handmade, a gift certificate can usually be used by the recipient.....just make sure it's to a place she will go.....

pennylynne 04-18-2013 08:21 AM

How about a very useful 12" long by 3"or4" wide ruler made to use with a hopping foot? Not a lot of peeps already have them that have long arms but they are very useful for guiding along ditches or other straight edges and small enough to be easily handled.

roserips 04-18-2013 08:22 AM

When I first read the thread immediately I thought make her a special pin cushion and then of course a lot of others had that same idea. You know it has to be a good idea since so many of us suggested it. I love my pin cushions and the ones that friends have given me are so special.

mjhaess 04-18-2013 09:16 AM

Gift certificates are always a great idea....I love getting them.....

What a great idea!

karate lady 04-18-2013 10:51 AM

gift certificates. best gift ever. My kids have finally figured it out. LOL...

kittiebug 04-18-2013 11:36 AM

I thank a gift card for fabric or a hanging flower basket. They are both very nice.

charlottemarie 04-18-2013 12:33 PM

I made a baby quilt for a dear friend's new baby and she sent me some of the best chocolate covered strawberries and cherries I ever tasted. The place is called Shari's Berries out of California.

i trade tops for quilting ...[nothing fancy ].just scrappy ones mostly

Janie67 04-18-2013 05:05 PM

A Jim Shore quilted figure.

Gerbie 04-18-2013 11:56 PM

I rec.'d a scissor holder from an ex sister inlaw once, and loved it. It was made from a plain cream colored quilted potholder, and lace trimmed in my favorite color orchid with orchid buttons sewn on. I have used it for years.

quiltingbuddy 04-19-2013 07:13 AM

I love to go online (so many websites we quilters use) and buy little notions for friends. My last couple of things were: a little magnetized suction cup thing that suctions right to your machine and holds a small pair of scissors (does not bother computerized machines so can be used by anyone), and a small battery operated light that hooks onto the machine with velcro. These were both perfect for a friend who runs Project Linus workshops and is always carting her machine off to who knows where. She now always has the light she needs in the right spot and a place to hold her scissors. I love these notions myself so I knew she would love them too. There are all sorts of little notions out there that won't break the bank but make great thank you gifts, or birthday gifts etc.

charsuewilson 04-19-2013 11:23 AM

How about home made cookies, candy, or a fancy loaf of bread?

LadyElisabeth 04-19-2013 11:53 AM

CHOCOLATE, or flowers, something we don't often buy for ourselves................well, except we do buy chocolate :)

gramquilter2 04-19-2013 02:26 PM

I always like homemade gifts the best, no matter how small or inexpensive.

This was what I thought of, too. She may appreciate you making her a quilt top. If she had quilted the other one for you, then I'd suggest a top roughly the same size as a gift. Then she can quilt and keep it.

How about a collection of pantographs, If she uses them.

LA rulers

A thread collection for the LA.

If she is financially comfortable enough to the point where she can buy herself treats often then I would think something handmade would be a great option and very appropriate considering you have that common "crafty" bond.

If she is someone who is likely on a tighter budget and can't usually splurge on something just for herself, then I would think a gift certificate would be the way to go since it would be like two gifts in one; the fun of buying something "frivolous" and then of course whatever it is she buys.
