Glide thread?

Where can I buy Glide thread? I have looked (sort of) and haven't found it yet. I had a cone of it and am about to run out. I had gotten it from a friend and she has since passed so don't know where she got it. I thought it might be Superior or Red Rock Threads, but didn't see it. Help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Fil Tec, no longer sells to individuals and there is a $100 min. order. I buy it here thanks to a board member who gave me the info: http://www.quiltscomplete.com/Depart...ead/Glide.aspx

You can also get it at Bobbin Central. Minimum order is $50.

They also sell Cairo Quilt, which is a great lower cost alternative that is comparable to Aurifil.

I think Kingsmen Quilting has it.

Bobbin Central only sells wholesale. I called and spoke to customer service. Their policy changed a few months ago. I can order what I need from the link I posted for about the same price I could order from Bobbin Central anyway.

My local quilt store sells it now. My long arm really likes it!

Another brand of thread.

Onebyone 08-19-2016 08:43 AM

Glide is thread for LA or machine quilting. Very good thread in beautiful colors.

I buy it here. Excellent service. I love the pre wound bobbins, especially for the long arm but also for my DSM.

Thanks for the info. :)

I LOVE the Glide thread! I use it primarily for free motion quilting. It gives a nice sheen, and I have used the same thread for the bobbin, and the tension is just awesome. Superthreadsale.com has periodic sales for different brands, and I have found Glide thread on sale there. Once I was able to purchase matching prewound bobbins, too. I will double check to make sure the link is correct. If not, I will post a correction immediately.

Filtec usually has a booth at the bigger shows, especially machine quilting shows.

I use their magnaglide prewounds quite a bit and love their thread. So I place a large order with them about once a year. I have no trouble fulfilling the $100 minimum and have had an account with them since I got my longarm.

For Grammy of 6, Glide thread is a trilobal polyester thread (very similar to Superior's Magnifico). Their initial marketing push was for embroiderers. But then a couple of big names in the quilting world discovered the thread, Karen McTavish and another, can't remember her name. It was probably the best thing that ever happened to their business when they partnered with Karen. Their business took off like a rocket. Word quickly spread in the longarming world about this beautiful, shiny, colorful thread that was a 40 weight but quilted out like a finer 60 weight. Strength plus beauty! Then we discovered how the magnaglide bobbins eliminated a world of tension problems. Most people are converts once they use it. Some don't like it and have had problems with it. I am not one of them and 90% of my quilting is done with Glide and pretty much 100% is done with magnaglide bobbins.

Edited to add, if you think you will use it for quilting it is a great investment to purchase one of their color cards which is made with actual samples of the thread. I would be lost without mine.

Metro embroidery now sells glide thread. I noticed this when I last ordered embroidery thread from them.

Grammy of 6, I was just about to ask too. I have heard of it but never used it. I went into the site onebyone posted & they have beautiful colors. I would like to learn more about it too

I really like this post. Thank you everyone for all of this info on Glide thread. I think I am going to give it a try. Lately for the actual quilting I have been using Auriful which my machine loves but my pocketbook doesn't unless I buy from the Craftsy's sales. Then I can get it at a good price.

Bobbin Central is Fil-Tec and they have changed to wholesale only unless you were a pre-existing customer when they switched. Glide is a good thread.

What beautiful vibrant colors!!

donna13350 08-20-2016 06:23 PM

Timing is perfect! I just saw that Metroemb.com was selling it...I had never seen that brand before. It is new for them. How does it compare to the Sigma and Metro brands?

Wow, didn't realize this... I am lucky to be a pre-existing customer as I recently ordered the large cones of Glide with matching prewound bobbins and I LOVE THEM!!!! :D

Just wanted to add that I did order some from Metro and they said it was shipped yesterday; got it today. Wow, can you say SERVICE. I say excellent service. (I just paid regular shipping; 3 days). Now I have another question. I love to quilt with it, but can I also piece with it? I just want to use it so badly. lol. Or do I just stay with cotton?

I would not recommend piecing with Glide for the following reasons.
Glide a bit heavy for piecing with so you may find your patchwork will not line up properly due to the thread taking up room in the seam allowance
Glide, being a poly, is a very slippery thread so if you chain piece it is highly likely that some of your stitching will come undone when you cut apart you chained units
Finally this is JMHO but Glide is such a pretty thread why hide it away in your seam allowance.

The cheapest and the fastest delivery I have found in Quilts complete. I ordered three days ago and got it this morning. They are awesome to work with.....
