Who ever first thought to use glue is a GENIUS!

I just tried it out on some batik that I needed to hem for napkins for DIL. Turn, fingerpress, glue, etc.

And wonderful mitered corners!

I will certainly be doing this from now on

It has made many aspects of quilting much easier and more enjoyable for me too :D:D:D

What product did you use?

Saturday we went to Nashville to the Grand Ole Opry for our 29th anniversary. On the way (pretty much) is a quilt shop I hadn't yet been to, so we had a quick visit to check it out.

DH and I enjoyed seeing the beautiful quilts all over the shop then I stood in front of the "goody" wall for a bit. There is always something there that I am wanting but not remembering to look for. I do the same at the "goody" wall at kitchen stores LOL

So, short answer to the question is Roxanne Glue Baste-it. It's spendy at $8 but now I have the bottle and 2 tips so I can just refill with Elmers.

And the show at The Opry was wonderful! Blake Shelton was inducted as the newest member by Trace Adkins. Be still my beating heart!!!!!!!!

Does it take a long time to dry?

I am confused about this glueing. Is this the one where you press it with an iron, then sew. Doesn't the glue gook up on your needle. What keeps it from doing that. I haven't tried it, didn't want to mess up the needle. What's the answer to this and the proper way to use the glue. Thanks

I am confused too? Do you just use Elmers school glue. Does the product wash out? Sounds so wonderfully easy!!!!!!

bluteddi 10-25-2010 07:07 PM

I'm surprised and confused now too. I thought ppl were useing elmers glue sticks, when they talked about glueing a quilt..... darn, thats what I bought...sigh...

CarrieAnne 10-25-2010 07:28 PM

I have heard of the gluesticks too!

bluteddi 10-25-2010 07:33 PM

oh really???? whew.. I dont feel so dumb.... IF the glue sticks work , they seem to be less messy and dry faster..

nursie76 10-25-2010 07:35 PM

I use elmers school glue to baste. Apply a thin line on the fabric fold into place and then set with iron. Doesn't gunk up the needle and washes out when you wash the quilt.

I use glue sticks when I am machine appliqueing.

Sharon Schamber has videos on how to use Elmer's washable school glue. Check out her Youtube video on binding. Basically you use just tiny dots of glue and iron them dry. I use it when I need to be super-accurate with matching seams.

I don't like glue sticks for freezer paper applique. Found that Elmer's washable paper paste works better for me -- much faster and no gooey paper edges. I apply it quickly with a finger. This is the same paste I grew up with -- smells like peppermint. Until 10 years or so, drugstores here used to carry it in among the school supplies. Now I have to order it online; can't find it locally.

Neither the glue nor the paste gums up the needle. By the time you sew, it is completely dry so it is similar to sewing through starch.

Amma did a very good tutorial on glue basting.

Don't worry, it's not going to gum up anything. I don't even have that
special tip. I just open the tube slightly and go with a light hand.
So far so good. :D
