This camping with all the benfits of home. No tent camping for me.

Please tell me more about this battery operated machine. I would love to get one for my granddaughter! Also it would be good camping here in Maine. We have a popup camper with electricity etc etc

I bought my granddaughter a battery operated machine that we take camping. We rustic camp so no electricity for us. I paid $20.00 for it and it sews great, It is just a little thing but she likes to sew and I can even get in a few things while we are there. It is the first one in this picture.

Here is one similar to the one I purchased. This one is even cheaper and it says double thread so it is a lock stitch.
The one I bought I found at Rite Aid at christmas time.

I have a friend whose DH took out the front bed & converted it to her sewing room in the camper!!

OmaForFour 03-25-2010 09:59 AM

Thank you so much! I will look into it.

Oh I plan on mine going in that fifth wheel! If I don't use it, so what,it is there if we have a slow minute...if not, it will work better when I get home!! DH has PROMISED me a trip to Tennessee to research my family this summer (he promised last year too, but....) So it is coming with us!

JRSAY 03-25-2010 10:04 AM

My favorite camping is in a hotel. No cooking, no cleaning, no dishes. . . . . . LOL! I used to enjoy camping but the arthritis is getting bad, the back is getting bad, and I just don't enjoy it like I used to. DD wants to go tent camping so I might have to do it again. I've got a queen size air mattress so it shouldn't be too bad.

I have 2 sewing machines, I have one that I take if I go to my quilting classes at the senior center and I also take it camping with me... You never know if it rain while camping I can alway do my quilting after I have my DH take me to the LQS.

I'm a Jersey Girl who "snowbirded" in FL in a 5th wheel for about 5 yrs and I always took my machine. Actually I bought it in FL the first year out and took lessons from the LQS. Now we live in FL and summer in our 5th wheel in NJ to be near the g'kids. I take my Janome 760 and try to make up and take only "kits" of what I'd like to accomplish. Last year I didn't get much quilting done, but I did make about 25 or so superhero capes for my grandson's birthday party. Boy was I glad I had it, cause I was the behind-the-scenes superhero! The hugs I got WOW.

Sharon321 03-25-2010 03:33 PM

Quilt Retreats are my vacation/.

Never taken my machine camping. We alway's pretty much roughed it even though we had a pop-up trailer for 15 years. Too busy hiking, fishing, and enjoying communing with nature.

Grammie Sharon 03-25-2010 04:19 PM

I've taken mine camping. I set it up outside under the awning on the picnic table. It's relaxing, great light and lots of fresh air. You meet lots of curious people who wonder what your doing.

Crafty1 03-25-2010 04:28 PM

I haven't taken mine camping as our travel trailer is small 15' I think. We're looking into getting a bigger one, but until then I don't plan to. I did buy a Singer portable Red Eye at a flea market in VA, does that count :)

Well, I asked my hubby last night "if I take my sewing machine, will it pull too much current from the electrical box?" We have a small travel trailer and I could set my machine up on the table. He says "no, I'll just run an extension cord directly to your machine...WHAT???? You're going to take your sewing machine camping?????" Like that was a bad thing! Like it's something that has never been done before.

Has anyone ever taken their sewing machine camping with them? Mine will miss me terribly.

Shelia

Never tried taking my machine, but I've knitted while camping out. Just might have to buy a small sewing machine, and just leave it in the trailer. Great idea!

mar32428 03-26-2010 03:00 AM

When we finally started camping without kids I used to take hand work with me. Then we got our motorhome and DH said quote, " If you take that sewing machine in the MH, I'm leaving." I never did.

Quilting Aggi 03-26-2010 03:05 AM

sniff sniff.. waaaahhh haaaaaaaa I won't be doing any camping this summer with a small infant!!! Trevor and I loooove to camp and hike and enjoy the great outdoors.

I have never taken my sewing machine with me as it is hard to plug it into a tree (we camp in a tent) LOL, but I think I have taken some small hand sewing projects with me. usually it doesn't get looked at cause we are too tired from all the hiking and exploring we tend to do during the day. By the time we get back to our camp site for supper we are too tired to do anything besides sit by the fire, eat supper and sip a glass of wine :)

pieces 03-26-2010 04:07 AM

I would be afraid to take my machine camping. Possibility of it getting damaged. Besides you are there to camp and spend time with the grand children. Sew when you get home.

Why won't you take the baby camping? We took our children from 5 weeks of age and we tent camped. The fold down stroller made a perfect bed and it fit in the tent. We had a big umbrella for over the pack and play outside, did lots of walks on the packed trails. I can tell you it will be easier this year than when they start walking! My grandkids have also gone camping since infants.

My little Featherweight is the first thing to be loaded when we head out in our fifth wheel. We winter in Texas and I wouldn't dream of being without my machine. Course it may not be considered real camping-more like living in an RV. On rainy days or when DH is out on his scooter, I can always be found inside behind the little Singer.

Tally Kathy 03-26-2010 05:02 PM

I'll be bringing my singer featherweight this week - Spring Break - we're going to a bayside cabin. I figured I could get in a lot of piecing done. Who know's if it will happen, but the intent is there. Also I know of 2 Quilt shops nearby...

sewgull 03-26-2010 05:49 PM

I would like to hve a feather weitht for my RV.

littlehud 03-26-2010 08:41 PM

We tent camp so there is no sewing machine, but if I had a camper.....even a small one it would go with me.

zz-pd 03-28-2010 04:55 PM

I have note, but that would be a wonderful thing to do. Penny

Ragann63 03-30-2010 05:45 AM

I'm an international flight attendant. I used to take my machine on layovers. I even kept a machine at one particular hotel I stayed at a lot so I didn't have to carry it back and forth! I think anywhere you can relax and do what you enjoy doing is a good thing. Take it and quilt away!
