This is a good reason to clean your sewing space...
https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/boy.gif This Sept. our guild will host what I call a Trash or Treasure Bazaar. We are to donate items we no longer want or use that is quilt related. The items must be in good shape. The items will be Free for the taking as well.
I have a ton of books gifted to me by my aunt that moved to a retirement community. I love them but I have way too many taking up space. I was also gifted fabric that I have not used in years.....novelty prints and colorways that I don't like. I'm glad we have a month to decide what goes and what stays in our sewing space. I need to free up space and get rid of the dust bunnies so I can see what I actually do use. Please share stories of your experience going to a similar event if you wish. |
We have had these at my guild too. I found it difficult not to replace items gotten rid of with new items from the same bazar. Negating any gained space. LOL Good luck and have fun!
|
LOL I always bring home about as much as I took to give away.
|
When we had meetings before Covid, we had a table for free quilting related things every meeting. Once a year we would have a sewing garage sale where you could sell things.
|
I really like those ideas!

I'm in two guilds. Both have tables of fabric/books/notions for free. I'm bringing LOTS of fab to both groups. Trying to get rid of fab I haven't used since I bought it some time ago. I think it's aged long enough in my house for it to be moved to another house. Last month lots of rulers and notions are no longer my responsibility...lol
One gal puts scraps in lunch paper bags. Fab is large enough to be cut into charms. I brought home one of those and have a new stack of charms to add to me collection. |
copycat- I don't belong to a guild but I did a major purge in January. It's the 3rd one I've done over the years. It was so liberating!
Now I have exactly what I want and need and no longer have to look at excess stuff I don't want. I donated it all and have never missed a thing I got rid of. |
I've been downsizing for years but I started with a huge hoard... I've gone through 3 major purges and about to start a 4th. While I was always happy with the idea that my fabric was going to be usable "someday" now I'm looking at it as "will I actually use that piece in the next 5 years". Some of the things I loved are still not in that time frame and now it's time to go...
Recently I won a couple of auctions for specific items that have left me with a lot of stuff I don't want! I am actively watching my local Craig's List for the next person who asks for free sewing or craft supplies. I can help them out but they have to take a couple of boxes! Today is my Tuesday group. I picked up an auction with a lovely hand crank singer on Sunday, and now have 4 boxes of craft stuff and a bag of non-quilting fabrics to offer. I don't think the other ladies will take much... but you never know, I kept a knitting UFO and about 4-5 small pieces of 70s/80s Joan Kessler for Concord sort of thing. Still remaining there is a nice needle point UFO with the yarn, I think it is a bench seat set? Large and rectangular, the floral design is done and all the background needs to be filled in. Here's my hand crank -- https://www.quiltingboard.com/vintag...r-t316010.html |
Great idea! Something to set up for the guild!

I'm always looking for Novelty prints for childrens I Spay quilts!
|
Somehow I ended up with a bunch of decor fabric. I just ordered zippers from Amazon and I'm going to make a bunch of toiletry bags for the local women's shelter.
Can't figure out what else to do with it. Suggestions welcome! |
bigger bags? Giant tote bags, even funky backpacks. ????
|
Great idea for the entire Guild to get rid of extra stuff. We have a free table with a donation jar at our meetings. Donations go to our Community Quilts. No one mans it, just whatever you feel like giving or not giving.
