Good Sewing Thread
What is the best thread to use when sewing on your quilt seams. Lately I have been having trouble with coats&clark white cotton not breaking but sort of fraying and having to stop and re-thread several times during sewing, new needle & everything working fine except for that, any suggestion on better thread. Tk, JU.

I use Aurifil. My machine doesn't seem to like Coats & Clark-it shreds every time. If I have to buy something right away I'll get Gutterman.
You could try a bigger needle. With a #12 I had shredding problems with Connecting Threads thread but it's not as bad with a #14. |
I use Gutermann cotton 50 wt and never have a problem with it. I use it for piecing and quilting.
|
If your thread is fraying you need a different size or type of needle different types have different eyes may cause it... The wrong size for the weight of thread will cause fraying too...that being said... My machine does not accept coats & Clark thread for some reason. I use thread from Connecting Threads and Aurifil thread most of the time
|
The Coats and Clark 100% cotton thread on the cardboard spools is 30 wt thread. Try a larger needle like a 90/14, the change should solve your problem.
|
Presencia 60-weight, 3-ply, 100% cotton is my favorite thread for piecing. You can use a size 70 to 75 needle with it.
|
I use Sew Fine 50 weight
|
You can get a million different, well maybe not that many answers to this question as to what is the best thread.
|
My favorite is Metler 100% cotton, with silk-finish. 2nd is Guterman.
|
I piece with Bottom Line.
Having said that, I agree with others who suggest a larger needle, or at least one with a larger eye, such as a topstitch. |
I do my best piecing with Aurifil 50wt 2-ply. Agree with others that the needle you are using may be too small or the wrong type for the size of thread you have.
|
My machine does not like Coats or Floriani. I am currently in LOVE with Connecting Threads Essentials for piecing. It's a 50/3 thread, so I use an 80/12 topstitch machine needle. They recently had a sale where a 1,200 yard spool was only $1.95, so I stocked up. But even the regular price of $2.79 is still quite a bargain!
|
It's important to know the weight and ply and content of thread then you have to select the needle size and type of needle for that thread. I use 2 ply 50wt or use a 60wt or higher for piecing. The thinner the bobbin thread the better. I don't try to match my bobbin thread to the top thread in wt. or brand. Doesn't make a difference to me. I use titanium coated topstitch needles. It's easy to find the wt and ply info for thread by going to the website of the thread if it isn't on the spool. Right now I'm using Aurifil for the top (because I have a lot of it) and prewound Sew Fine bobbins from Superior Thread with a size 80 topstitch needle.
|
I use the Mettler silk finish thread. All of my machines do well with it.
|
I use YLI softtouch for all my piecing.

Yes, I love Presencia 60/3. I use it with my Berninas and with my Featherweights. I bought a cone of the 4 basics (white, black, ecru and grey) about 3 years ago, and have still not finished a cone. I usually use an 80/12 needle for piecing and don't have any problems. I wind all my bobbins with the Presencia, too.
I get mine from Harriet Hargraves' website.

I love those bright colors, thanks for the tip.

Oh!! much nice help needed and appreciated. Tk. u everyone will be going to Hancock's & JoAnn's in few days will check things out, wrote it all down. Tks. for all the help..

Oh man.... you all are enablers!
I went over to massdrop to check out the Aurifil... and found the Oliso Pro iron over there for $120 with free shipping. Now that I'm moving into my rolling cabin (I bought that used motorhome yesterday to have some "get away" space to sew and work on a few more patterns!) ... I'm thinking I need one set of gear to leave in the bus, and still have things at home, too. Headed back to massdrop. :) |
I'm baaaaack. :o
While I drooled over those colors of Aurifil, I decided to pop for the Oliso iron instead. I've been wanting one... and given my Elna Press isn't going to probably make the cut to get on the sewmobile (lol) ... I want a beefier iron for doing stabilizers, etc. when I'm off in my hideaway. As for the Aurifil... what a great price! But I'm still trying to round out having doubles (one spool in my bag for classes, etc and one at home) and now I'm going to try to get triples (so one can stay on the bus) of my most used common colors. When I need to do some topstitching, etc... (where I think having those yummy colors would be nice) ... I just raid my embroidery thread collection to finish off an item. So for me, right now, as hard as it is... I managed to pass on those color collections. |
omg. The one has variegated colors. I must buy at least one collection-thanks for enabling!!
|
Rasant. I use it for ALL my stitching, hand, machine and long arm.

One of the best threads is SEW FINE 50 wt. made by SUPERIOR THREADS. It is Egyptian cotton, and has little to no dust associated with it. Presensia is an okay thread.
Gutterman was originally made in Germany. It used to be my best thread. It was bought out by another company, and the quality went downhill. Coats and Clark? I wouldn't bother with it. |
Coats & Clark is actually pretty expensive if you look at how little you get per spool. And by contrast, Aurifil seems expensive until you do the math - there is a LOT of thread on each spool!
Aurifil is my favorite for piecing and SITD quilting, Connecting Threads is my favorite for quilting that I want to have show. I generally match threads, top & bobbin. (not necessarily color, but weight) But this is one of those questions...ask 10 quilters and you'll get about 25 answers. :) |
Have you changed the needle? Almost any thread will fray if there is a rough place on the needle. I am so guilty if not changing the needle often enough. froggyintexas

I use Connecting Threads, have for years and have never had any problems. Plus their prices are terrific and the colors, oh the colors!

I ended up doing two of the massdrop buys. What the heck is wrong with me. Bright side is that I should be set for a while (I bought a ton of off white, white and gray from sue's sew ez designs when she was open).
|
I piece my quilts with Aurifil & Gutterman, the Aurifil is my favorite thread.
|
Coats and Clark shreds with my machine, I have lots of it left over from my Mom's sewing, it's not old, but it shreds terribly.
