Hello all,

I just received the 100 FQ 1930's reproduction fabric bundle that I ordered from laptopquilting.com last week and I can hardly wait to get home and unpack it. I want to make my Mom a somewhat-larger-than-lap-size quilt for Christmas. I'm looking for ideas that would fit this type of fabric ... I want it to be scrappy, but no applique (I haven't mastered that). I was thinking maybe a mix of stars or bow-ties or spools or ??? Does anyone have any ideas or links to share? All suggestions will be appreciated :D

Have fun with your fq's! Pet them daily!

This is a cute pattern. It does have some applique but you could always leave that off.

How about a sampler with Sunbonnet Sue and Sam, a dresden plate, a churn dash, a fan, a house, ohio star and so on. Use muslin or a solid white background. Maybe make a piano key border. The blocks could be 12 1/2 unfinished and you could either make 12 or 20 and use some solid colors from that era to make a sashing. That is my idea!!!!

There is a quilt pattern called Dominique's Treasures that is very easy and scrappy. No applique.

http://www.earlywomenmasters.net/quilts/index.html and this website has lots of neat block pattern ideas also.

How about Broken Dishes?

Here's a link for a scrappy one made from 1930's Aunt Grace and it's really scrappy. (The picture is at the bottom of the page.)

Here's some information on the quilts made during the 30's. Perhaps they will give you some ideas.
http://www.historyofquilts.com/publications.html
This next one is part of a series of articles on the history of quilting by Judy Anne Breneman (the series starts here http://www.womenfolk.com/quilting_history/pieced.htm) The Depression era quilts are here:
http://www.womenfolk.com/quilting_hi...ressionera.htm[url]
The best known patterns from that time are Dresden Plate, Grandmother's Flower Garden, Sunbonnet Sue, and Double Wedding Ring. Dresden Plate and GFG would be especially suitable for a period scrappy look.

SusyQ! You just need to put all of those headache quarters in a box and give them to a good friend that will just rid you of all that stress....me!:))I love the 30's and have been collecting them for quit awhile..the whole time looking and looking for the perfect pattern. There was one listed in the April 'American Patchwork & Quilting'...only the one that is on my 'have to do this one' w/my 30's is the August issue. You can find it on page 48 the desing is called 'retro crossroads'. If you don't get this mag, then scoot to your local library and check this out. I am too excited to do this one and I think it will be lots of fun. Only I am being really-really good right now and trying to get 2 kid college quilts done in time....I am on the second:0)Keep us posted on what you are going to do...Curious minds would like to know (like me!)Skeat

You could do a sampler of the blocks suggested on this thread.

Roben 07-21-2008 03:00 PM

Eleanor Burns has a book based on 1930's reproduction fabrics - 'Egg Money Quilts'. The book has a couple of sampler layouts and directions for 13 blocks and they look great in those fabrics.

Roben 07-21-2008 03:00 PM

Loretta, either great minds think alike or I owe you a Coke :D

Marcia 07-21-2008 05:29 PM

100 FQs? All 30s reproduction fabrics? I am drooling just thinking about them  Can you please post a picture of SOME of them? It might inspire more ideas for you!!

This is going to be a fun quilt! I cannot wait to see what you end up making

nor'easter 07-21-2008 06:18 PM

Skeat, that quilt is perfect!! It uses the Arkansas Crossroads block which can be set any number of ways for all different looks.
Here's a 12" block and one setting:http://www.quilterscache.com/A/Arkan...oadsBlock.html
An 8" block and another setting http://www.allpeoplequilt.com/projec...ssroads_1.html
And a coloring page with a different setting http://www.blockcentral.com/arkansascrossroads.shtml
Oh, the possibilities!! May just have to add that one to my list, too, but in civil war repros.

Skeat 07-21-2008 06:35 PM

Those are great sites north'east! The 8"block you posted looks just like it don't you think? I think it will be a fun one to do for sure!! Reproductions will look fantastic too...! I have it on the 'list'...:))Thanks for posting all those for eye candy! Skeat

Marcia, here's a couple of pics of the fabrics. I still haven't decided on a design yet, I'm waiting for the American Patchwork magazines to come to my local library.

Hi Loretta, just a quick question, I have noticed various references to Sacks that they used for quilting and you have just said they are now being reproduced, I thought when I first heard that it would be really stiff hard material to work with, suppose they had no choice then, but is it how I imagine or have they softened the fabric???

Got my October issue of American Patchwork & Quilting today and there's a scrappy quilt in it that might suit you...actually there are several in this issue that would work well, but this is the one I was thinking of. It's called Scrap Happy. The magazine hits the stores on Aug 5th if you don't subscribe. Can also see them online at http://www.allpeoplequilt.com/magazi...ontents_1.html

Made the "Retro Crossroads" quilt. Didn't use reproduction fabrics, just scrappy and used black as the background. Easy and enjoyed working on it. Would be wonderful in reproduction 30's fabrics.

Is this the place to come with a question, or what??? :D :D :D :D

I saw that issue in the Navy Exchange today. That quilt is really pretty. WAS going to buy the magazine, but the pages were all wrinkled and it seemed to be missing pages, I'm thinking some design pages were taken out of it. I'd order the magazine and have it sent to me, but it seems I can't even get the Fons & Porter one that my friend got me on time. It's always a month late.

Can't wait to see what you do with those fats!
