Got the La Passacaglia papers
 

I'd been sort of obsessed with the La Passacaglia quilt, talked myself out of buying the paper pieces last year (you don't even like tiny pieces, Teresa!) and then ended up pulling the trigger this year. And now I'm in the "what was I thinking?" stage.

Strangely, now the quilt is leaving me a little cold. The grass is always greener on the other side, I guess. I don't know why.

I'm trying to think of something to do with the pieces that isn't a copy of the LaPass. Since the papers create pentagon-based Mandalas, it seems there would be plenty to do with them. I figure the design has potential, in a similar way that you can depict an infinite number of different pictorial patterns in a storm at sea quilt, just by changing color placement.

I went to Pinterest, of course, and searched for pentagon-based quilt. And I pretty much got La Passacaglias. To make a long story short, several different searches all brought me not much more than La Passacaglia.

So has anybody here done anything totally crazy with their LaPass papers to make a totally different arrangement? If so, would you share? Inspiration might get me going in the direction I need.

I have made several stand alone blocks they could easily be turned into a traditional block style quilt. These are just a couple

Some of these I combined a couple of the pieces to form one bigger piece or made my own pieces to add to the la pass shapes. I made more these are just the ones I could easily find in the computer.

It looks like the designs are based on 18, 36, and 72 degree angles - so basically only compatible with themselves.

Or dividing the 360 degree circle by 20, 10, or 5.

Thanks for the replies! Yes, it's a design that is compatible with other same angles.

I've discovered a few interesting possibilities. Apparently the included "diamonds" lend themselves well to 3D effects!

I think I'll lay out my blocks, maybe color a few and see what I come up with. Could be a whole new thing!

It's starting to feel a little like "Legos" for quilters. The possibilities are almost endless! I do wish the pieces weren't quite so small, although as someone who can't stand to throw away anything larger than a half inch, I can see it as a scrap buster project! If this goes well, though, maybe next year, I'll get the larger size ones.:thumbup::).

Thanks, that is one of my favorites I made into a block too. I think that one was made for Sewbiz in one of the boom swaps. I know it was in the boom, it is the Sewbiz part I'm not sure about.

My friend bought the papers for a "La Pass" quilt. They were quite pricey and at first I thought they weren't worth it. However, when I saw how much work it was saving (no need to save and cut paper templates), and how precise they were working up, I think they are well worth it. I'm putting it on my Santa list lol.
My friend out a lot of thought into her fabric choices and fussy cutting and it is coming out stunning.

It's absolutely worth it. And the pieces are so precise that they go together especially well. Every time you cut something, you lose or gain a tiny bit and it really matters when paper piecing. Thus, I'd never do a huge design of intricate pieces unless I was using laser cut pieces. The price fluctuates, so check Amazon, etc for deals. Paper Pieces had a cyber Monday deal (25% off everything), but I think that discount only happens once a year.

You, dear girl are a much better woman than I am. I love the looks of the quilt, but frankly, I'm just to lazy. However, just do one block at a time, between projects. Or use the blocks as Leader/Enders which build fast. It will be beautiful, no matter when you finish the project. ps: We've all had those moments of weakness and we're all still sewing. LOL

I love my LaPas, and sold the book and papers for what I paid for them when done, because so many people don't want (or at that time anyway) to order the book from France.
If you haven't used the papers and they are from Paper Pieces you could ask to return them, and if it is the size detering you there are bigger papers now so the quilt goes faster.
You could probably also flip them on Ebay pretty quickly.

I also didn't do too much fussy cutting, my stash didn't lend itself to that.

I didn’t do the proper La Pass (still need to finish quilting it) but did the New Hexagon one. I didn’t buy my fabrics ahead and had to shop for at least a couple of fabrics for each “flower” which made it fun.......seeing the possibilities. I was so sick of each flower when near the end of each so I recommend taking them one at a time.
