Got a "new" machine today

$19.00 at the thrift store.

It is a White model 1620.
It didn't come with accessories but I have some that fit. No controller either, but I have one that fits.
I put a different foot on, cleaned and oiled it a bit and it makes a good stitch.

I need to download a manual and I should be set.

Did I get a good deal?

DresiArnaz 04-15-2015 11:10 AM

Got rid of the final squeak and adjusted bobbin tension

So far, I am thrilled!

Wire on light needs attention though.

Makes a good stitch and runs like a scalded ape!

Cari-in-Oly 04-15-2015 11:12 AM

Then I'd say you got a great deal!

Cari

That' a great deal! Are you sure the "store alarms" didn't go off? When I get a "steal of a deal", I ask the cashiers if their store alarm will go off when I leave.

(Yesterday I bought a brand new purse originally $59 ... marked down to $11.80 ... had $10 coupon ... so I only paid $1.93 (including tax). I rarely get deals like this.

DresiArnaz 04-15-2015 01:48 PM

Oooh Sharon-that's a screamin' good deal!

I'm having a good run here lately. Trying to figure out what I did to deserve it...

Hopefully it doesn't mean there's something bad lurking around the corner...

Went to a goodwill week before Easter and they were have a sale....all clothes $1.23 each, all purses $1.23, shoes buy one pair at half price other free! Other things in store were all 50% off marked prices. People's cart were mountains.....it was fun......found stuff for grands.......

DresiArnaz 04-15-2015 03:46 PM

I looooooove the thrift store!

I hate buying anything new and always try the thrift store first to try and get it dirt cheap unless I'm buying gifts.

caspharm 04-15-2015 03:46 PM

Sounds like a great deal to me! Enjoy your new purchase.

DresiArnaz 04-15-2015 07:23 PM

The thing is soooooooooo quiet!

I can't believe how quiet it is.

Now I don't have to worry about waking people up when I sew.

Sounds like a great deal to me. Our thrift stores doesn't have much worth buying. Seems the good stuff I donate doesn't end up here.

ManiacQuilter2 04-16-2015 04:13 AM

WOW, no deals like that where I live. Wish you had posted a photo. Fun to look at the older DSM.

Have never found a deal like that at any of our thrift stores; i.e. SA or GW.

DresiArnaz 04-16-2015 06:16 AM

Best thrift store evah!

Last week I scored another bag jam packed with fat quarters for five bucks.

Dina 04-16-2015 06:24 AM

You certainly did well!!!! Enjoy. Your machine is a cutie!

Hah...you surpassed MY best deal. I got one with some accessories for $30. and thought that was the best deal. LOL

DresiArnaz 04-16-2015 07:14 AM

If you got a controller AND accessories for thirty then you got the better deal IMO.

DresiArnaz 04-16-2015 07:48 AM

I wish I could find out more about this machine like when it was made. I'm gonna guess mid 80's to mid 90's

DresiArnaz 04-16-2015 02:08 PM

Took care of what I thought might be loose connection where controller plugs in

Turned out to be dirty contacts. I wrapped a q-tip with a small piece of fine sandpaper and cleaned the contacts.

Wow what a great deal so glad you found a sewing machine you love.

jmoore 04-17-2015 02:15 AM

wow! what a fantastic find... doesn't it feel nice to have a machine you can enjoy sewing on?

todiesmom 04-17-2015 03:13 AM

You may have difficulty finding a White manual. Google it...some kind person had left directions on how to get one. Wish I had written it down but as I recall I had to go thru a Singer site to get it. My White is a 1950 model so not completely vintage...like the black machines...It was my Mom's and is in excellent condition.

quilttiger 04-17-2015 04:24 AM

So happy for you! It is a nice feeling when a machine goes a great job. I bought a brand new looking Kenmore at an estate sale for $35.00, including accessories and the manual. Try to Google your machine/model number online. I did that with mine and found mine was made in 1977 before plastics were used. It is also quiet and runs beautifully. I took it to have it cleaned and tuned up, and the sewing technician was VERY impressed.

Enjoy your machine to the hilt!

There's a vintage machine sub-forum that you might check out - lots of very knowledgeable people there and someone might be able to guide you to a manual and help with figuring out its age.

I love old machines - sounds like you found a good solid workhorse! Does it have a metal body? Just think how much you'd have to pay to get similar quality new, now. If you could even find it.

Whenever I go to thrift stores, the first thing I do is check for old machines and accessories. I'm always hoping to find a treasure! :)

southernmema 04-17-2015 06:10 AM

Sounds like a "steal" to me.

DresiArnaz 04-17-2015 06:23 AM

I don't think this thing is vintage-maybe 80's or 90's

DresiArnaz 04-17-2015 06:59 AM

Hmmm. Still don't know if this thing is vintage or not but it looks an awful lot like a Singer So Fro I had back in the day. Those are being sold as vintage.

Maybe I'll ask on the other forum...

Billy'swife 04-17-2015 10:42 AM

Good for you! What a wonderful find. I don't visit our thrift stores often enough, but I did find a "ball gown" at SA last week for $5.00 that fit perfectly for our AZ Guild's Spring Meeting. We were asked to wear a ball gown because the theme was "Cotton Ball".

MargeD 04-17-2015 10:51 AM

I'd say you got a good deal, depending on how fast a "scalded ape" runs. I've never heard that phrase before. Cute.

JuneBillie 04-17-2015 11:18 AM

That is a great deal, and some other great deals you girls are telling about also. I love finding those bargains.

joivey 04-17-2015 02:26 PM

Enjoy your new baby.

mjhaess 04-20-2015 06:56 AM

Mariposa 04-20-2015 07:12 AM
