Gracie stitch regulator
 

I just became aware that I can purchase a stitch regulator for my new to me Juki tl 2000 qi. I'm still playing with free motion and enjoying myself.

My question has anyone used one without the quilting frame ?

I might be wrong (I often am!) but I believe that this stitch regulator goes on the frame, not the machine, so you could not use it with just the machine.
The way frame stitch regulators work is there are encoder wheels that ride on the tracks and detect how you are moving the machine (not the fabric). The info from the encoders goes into your computerized machine and regulates the stitches. There's no way for the encoders to work without the frame. what you may have read is that this setup talks to your machine.

I have the sure stitch and it will only go on a frame the sensors that regulate are wheels that replace two of the wheels on the carriage that the swing machine sits on. Sorry

Mine attaches on the machine. I have a Juki that is mounted on a Handi quilt frame. I can use the regulator on or off the quilt frame because it is attached to the machine not the frame.

I have one that goes on my Brother 1500. It is off/on and regulates the speed from fast to slow. I like it much better then using my foot to try to maintain a constant speed.

I've got one that attaches to my Brother 1500 also.

I guess mine would be called a speed regulator-- it plugs into my machine instead of the foot pedal. I have it taped to the table at the front of my machine. It has a single stitch, a run, and speed dial. It had to fit the plug- in where the foot control installed. I like it a lot because it holds steady speeds-- whereas my foot was not consistent. I got the " Grace' to fit my Elna (same as Janome).

I use one called a Cruse Control just google it. Most stitch regulators have sensors that ride on the rails of the frames and that is how they can tell how fast you are moving your machine and then they compensate for that for the perfect stitch.
