At a graduation ceremony earlier this month in SD several students (native americans I believe) were wrapped in quilts by their families as they walked back to their seats. They looked like the ones with the big lone star. Does anyone know the significance of this gift. It was very touching.

Signifies new beginnings - first star. And it also signifies "God's Eye" covering the person, watching over them. These are given at very special times in ones' life.

Lonestar quilts are big in the native american community. Where we send flowers and cards they send the lonestar quilt. It is a great honor to recieve one of these quilts. They will give them at graduations, births, deaths, weddings. Some tribes say its gods eye others say its the morning star. Its almost like its part of there religion. You have to remember that before white man the native used buffalo for everything, the furs and hides were used for these purposes. After the buffalo were killed off and the white man stepped in they were taught to quilt. And every since they have produced some of the most beautiful quilts. Quilts and textiles in gerneral are big in the native community. I've seen some really gorgeous cerimonial quilts made by the Lakota Tribes. I recently posted one that I made for my father. Your quilt is beautiful. While I have been giving quilts at graduation for many years these seem to have a more impressive feeling that goes with them. Thanks to all for the info
