Hello!

I will be using the quilter's cache pattern for grandmother's fan:

http://www.quilterscache.com/G/Grand...sFanBlock.html

On page 2, it talks about adding the lace in applique. do you think I could sew ribbon or perhaps rick rack onto the applique instead of Lace? I have no idea what the turn under or needle turn methods are. I was just planning on some wonder under and a zig zag stitch.

Do you think rick rack or ribbon would work?

Either would be fine. A word of advice from someone who uses that stuff A LOT, make sure you machine stitch your pieces to your background fabric if this quilt will be put in the washer and dryer. the fusible beats needleturned any day but is not necessary permanent when put in the washer and dryer. Also if you have any decorative stitches on your machine, consider using one of them where the "corner piece or curved piece, meets the ribs of the fans. Especially in contrasting thread. Just a suggestion.

I was planning on stitching around the edges of the fan with the machine. I thought that all webbing was water soluble and would fall apart in the wash! I was planning on just a zig zag. I have such bright colors in the top, I may have to get some thread for the applique part. Contrasting thread is a GREAT idea. I bet I could use it on the dresden plate too!

Thanks!!

I used lace on the outer edge for a birthday block and machine appliqued it, using decorative stitches.

It's a great pattern, easy to put together.
