Granddaughter and Camo quilt
Surprise, surprise, surprise, my granddaughter has asked me to help her make a quilt. She has a new boyfriend who is in boot camp and wants to make him a camo quilt. LOL, love her dearly, super fun to be around but a real air head, am I allowed to say that about one of my own?
1. What is a camo quilt? A regular quilt made out of camo fabric? I am assuming it will be the digital camo worn by the Army. I don't know yet, if she is up to mixing the different types of camo. 2. What is the simplest pattern for said quilt? She does not sew at all if I remember right. 3. I am not the best teacher in the world (it's easier to do it myself?). Any suggestions?? |
yes a camo quilt is just that, Came material. some of it can be heavy and thick material so watch what you get. they also have fleece came and that would be an easy quilt. Since she does not sew I would just big blocks that would just be easier. good luck.

Warm wishes is the quilt pattern that I would suggest ~
http://www.quiltmaker.com/patterns/d...html?idx=5185_ Great for beginners and it uses a main focal fabric (camo) , plus it is FREE. |
You could, if you do not want to actually teach how to quilt but just want a simple one day project. Go down to Walmart, Joannes or any store that sells fabric and get one of the fleece pre packaged quilt kits. You will be able to get one in military colors, emblems etc. Nice and easy. Of course if you like the idea of actually making a regular quilt. Then a simple 9 patch with the camp fabric as accents and borders.
|
I wonder how 9 patch would look with green camo and brown camo would look?
|
I like the 9 patch with different colors of camo fabric. Here is a great site for the fabric:

OK, she still does not know what exactly she wants BUT we did go to Jo-Ann's and found fleece she loves. Now I'm thinking use the fleece for the batting and backing?????? Possibly like the "envelope" style? Do something simple, fence rail with the colors on the front??

LOL, I have no idea why there are so many!!!!

thank you grammy for the link...i really like that pattern!

My granddaughter asked for a camo quilt for herself! I used camo flannel on the front and a realtree camo fleece for the back, then had her tie the quilt. She can also sew together the quilt from quarters. Here's a link to what mine looked like: http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...g-t196140.html
Her dad wanted to keep the quilt, so he's getting his own this Christmas (with different fabrics). My husband decided that not only is the fabric camo, the overall pattern effect is one of digital camo. |
Just awesome. I know a lot of deer hunters that would jump for joy for a quilt like this. Thanks for sharing.

I made one for a soldier after boot camp. Used warm wishes, but really played down the camo. Here's the thread:

Thanks for all the advise. She is 19, so who knows where this quilt will end up. LOL I know the boydriend will get it but so far we have no idea what it will look like. We will be off for more shopping today!!

The one I did for a customer was really simple...she sent me two sheets...one was camo (foresty trees, etc.), and one was a tan color. I quilted them with a bear, cabin & pine tree panto...came out really nice.
A good, really simple & forgiving pattern would be a rail fence. marge

It this is being made to a man in middle east, the fleece might be kind of warm, while it is cold in winter, summers are very hot and fleece would get dirty easier with sand also. Cotton would brush off easier, and they do not have gret washing facilities most of time.

My granddaughter likes camo and I am making her a logcabin with camo.

He isn't deployed, still in Boot Camp.

Looks great! I like that you didn't try to "hide" the camo. Did you teach your granddaughter how to make it or did you do it yourself? I've never done an Irish Chain, but have always liked them, I'll have to try one soon. Has the boyfriend seen it yet?

You can usually find flannel camo, too, so she might use some camo for the pieced front and a second similar piece of flannel for the back. Or even fleece----which would eliminate the need for batting. |
Good start on a great gift.
|
Gracious, you are quick! Great job
