A friend has acquired a quilt top, all hand sewn in this pattern and has asked me to help her finish it. It will need batting and backing. Any suggestions on how to do so around all those hexagon edges?

I always liked quilting 1/4 inch from the seam on the flower garden. Or in the ditch gives it a little puff.

This solution might sound unusual, but the quilt I have is very old and I haven't seen another like it. It's a grandmother's flower garden my grandmother pieced years ago. The backing fabric was laid out right-side down and about 6" was folded back on every side so that the top fit on it exactly. The top was blind stitched to it around all the outer hexagon edges. There is no binding on the quilt, and only a very thin flannel batting that doesn't extend to the quilt edge. The edges are squared at an angle to follow the hexagon shape.

Have you considered tieing it instead of quilting it?

It would take time but it would like nice to put stitches in each piece :roll:

I also got a flower garden quilt from my mother only it was finished, and it was made all of gingham check material, not the strongest stuff, it had popped seams all over, and I hand quilted it many years after she was gone, it took a long time but I love it and think of her everytime I use it.
