I inherited a Grandmother's Flower Garden top that my Great Grandmother made in the late 1930's. It is hand pieced with 1 inch octagons. I want to know how to finish the outside edge now, so I can decide how to proceed. I have seen these quilts cut straight across and finished with binding, quilts bound around all the octagons with both tape and without and one with the quilt appliqued to a wide border. No matter how I proceed, doing it by hand is labor intensive. I need guidance as I have limited hand quilting experience. Thanks Susan

This is actually a matter of your preference. What why will make you feel most comfortable? Go with that. :-D

Wow, what a treasure! My personal opinion would be to applique to a wide border, because you retain the integrity of the entire quilt.

Whatever you decide, please post a picture when you are finished.

Congratulations, what a cherished quilt, do you have a picture of your grandmother that you could transfer for the label, that would be cool and unique

Hi Susan, I would applique it to a border. That's what I did. Did you mean hexagons or are they really octagons? What ever you do, it is a real treasure. <<<Eva>>>
