grandmothers flower help/question/opinion
 

Just finished pcing a gmfg. Its about 50 x 58. 3/4" hexes.
it doesnt match anything in my house, so the cat zoey is
getting it for the holidays.

How do i quilt it??????????
it will be quilted by hand, as i cant machine quilt
and i think the quilt police will come and shoot me
If it is machine quilted.

Do i quilt around wvery hex, or just fower or centers?????

I am doing a GMFG too - I plan to quilt it a 1/4 inch around each hexie - but I am doing it by machine - sewing those hexies together by hand is enough hand sewing for me.

I did mine by 1/4 inch on each hexie. But I liked another one where they put the quilting on the outside of each row. (I know what doesn't sound right, but each flower row has a quilting around it and the center of the flower has a design. I don't remember exactly what was put in each center, but I thought it looked great and wanted to remember it if I ever get brave enough to make another one.

I was thinking 1/4 inch inside each hex, but you could also do a curved, loop of a line from one point to the next point or, even start at one point of the hex, skip the next point and kind of 'loop' to the second point. It's kind of hard to describe what I mean, but then you could do it on the machine, and still do it maybe as a single line or with a second ine, if needed. Just tell the QP that the quilter heard they were coming and skipped to Mexico.

it depends on the batting you choose- if you choose one (like warm & natural) that allows up to 10" between quilting lines you could probably just quilt around the outside of each flower- if you choose one (like hobbs heirloom) which requires 2" between quilting lines you will need to quilt the hex's...but it's a personal choice- you can quilt it any way you want. remember to share pictures! :)

I'm not sure if this is sad or not but I'd just choose where and quilt in the ditch. It would be so hard to do every hexagon for me. Good luck!:thumbup:

Sorry Gladys, but 1/4inside hexagon for me. Did three of these. Fun to carry around and assemble. Did mine on machine too...quilting only. Good luck!
