My heart breaks for you.

As others have stated in this thread it is an all to common occurrence in nursing facilities. In our experience an afghan disappeared never to be seen again. The staff in my observation had a high turnover rate during our Mother's 1 year stay. Under paid, under staffed, under appreciated, this not by any means is an excuse for theft, nor to say that it is staff.

Unfortunately in the U.S. unless you are extremely wealthy and are self-insured, the care of the elderly is alarming with cursory oversight to protect and care for fragile end of life care.

I too made a quilt for my Aunt Mary. I live in another state, so my cousin took it to her, took pictures of her with the quilt and promptly took it home. My cousin had a photo made for her to keep bedside. It's not the same but she too didn't want the quilt to relocate.

carhop 02-09-2012 08:13 AM

I am sorry for your loss. Have you looked in their laundry room and the rooms for it? I had bought my mother a real nice spred for her bed and house keeping took it and washed it put another one on her bed she was having a meltdown over it I had to go and find it in the laundry room it had her name on it but they just put it in regular laundry.

I'm so sorry that this happened to you and your Granny. When I was a hospice nurse, I made several quilts for patients. There was two at one nursing home that I had made. One turned up missing and of course no one knew anything about it and the poor patient didn't have any family members to watch over her. I knew who took it, but couldn't prove it, but I figured that she had a higher authority to answer to one of these days.

2manyhobbies 02-09-2012 09:27 AM

I hate to say this, but that happens all the time in nursing homes. My mom finally had to take the big step because she had serious sight problems. Things went missing all the time, and often my sister found that another nursing home resident had taken it. She saw a woman walking down the hall with Mom's slippers on. I'd make something with just nice big squares. I donate the tied fleece ones(or I sew two fleece pieces together, right sides out, sew it all the way around, trim with a scalloped rotary cutter, and call it a day. They look nice and are so cuddly.

Check out http://googlyeyesglitter.blogspot.co...are-trick.html

I started this last night and have a 36-inch square this morning. For a larger quilt, make several similar tops and stitch them together before making your sandwich.

Blessings to your Granny Mary!

It broke my heart reading your story. It's not the "fabric" or "batting" or anything like that...it's the love that was put into it. I completely and totally understand. There are so many people in the homes now, and not to mention the visitors, that anything is likely to come up missing. Grandma had all sorts of things grow legs and walk off but thankfully nothing sentimental or of any value. I do hope the quilt is found or you can put together another one. I looked at the Stripee pattern and it's really pretty! My vote is you do that one but I hope you're not disappointed again by it disappearing. Prayers coming the first one is found and returned to Granny Mary!!!

AnnieH 02-09-2012 09:35 AM

So sorry. Best wishes to you and Granny.

This happens even in the best of nursing homes. I worked in one where after looking through security camera video they finally found that an aide went out the back door with a garbage sack, but never put the garbage in the dumpster. That sack went to her car! That is how she took a quilt out of the home. Of course, many could never be traced that far.
It is ok and suggested to make quilts for nursing home residents, just that don't make them cute or terribly personal. I've even heard the uglier the better. And give them to the home, and not a specific person. that way they get a quilt to warm up with, but one that is least likely to walk out the door.

Nanaquilts44 02-09-2012 09:58 AM

I am so sorry this happened. When my mom was in a nursing home a rather new pair of her shoes was missing. I let the home know it was a new pair and kept asking about them (nicely) and weeks later they turned up in her room again. You just never know.

IdahoSandy 02-09-2012 10:08 AM

Nursing homes are famous for having sticky fingers. It could be one of the hired help or even another lady in the home. Quilts aren't the only thing taken, so don't give anything that is expensive like gold or silver jewelry. At this late date I would just buy a Wal-mart quilt or make her a quick scrappy one from some of your left overs.

fayeberry 02-09-2012 10:10 AM

Oh, that is too bad. Hard to see how anyone could enjoy a quilt stolen from a Granny in a NH. If another resident took it the staff will find it sooner or later....if a staff member took it, someone knows where it is. Best wishes to your precious Granny.

squires1042 02-09-2012 10:18 AM

Sorry to hear about the quilt.

I grew up in Ipswich and my family still lives there.

GrammaBabs 02-09-2012 10:23 AM

You spent a lot of time being sure this quilt turned out so lovely.... the way the flowers set,, the quilting design in the solid square... this is a tradgedy.... The world is quickly filling with heartless , greedy people... Be happy if you did get to see her face when you gave it to her,, and just remember that people like the person who helped Granny Mary "lose" her quilt.. will have to answer eventually... How about a disappearing 9 patch quilt,, i hear they are quick.. i love the "quick jelly roll quilt",, but that is all "horizontal".. good luck..and God Bless...

1949quiltlady 02-09-2012 11:54 AM

Quilt in a Day has a very quick quilt called "Tossed 9 Patch. I have made it a couple of times using layer cake (10 in squares) instead of the original charm squares.

keolika 02-09-2012 11:58 AM

I would suggest a really soft flannel rag quilt, it is quilt as you go, and do it in super comfy feel flannel in some soft colors . Hope you can get it done for her.

Phyl 02-09-2012 12:32 PM

Personally, I would BUY a quilt in a store and give it to her. She will LOVE it as you gave it to her. Then, WHEN it is missing AGAIN, you won't feel so badly. It happens all of the time unfortunately.

catmcclure 02-09-2012 12:49 PM

Learned many years ago when my mother was in a nursing home in order to keep her clothing in her room (and in the nursing home) to take black marker and write "Property Of" in large letters on the backside of the dress. Nobody could see it when she was in her wheelchair, and nobody wanted to wear it in public. If you make another quilt, I would suggest writing in large letters about 4" high across the top of the quilt "STOLEN FROM". That way when you bring the quilt home you can applique a wide border (or maybe a hanging sleeve) across that area.

bbeyes 02-09-2012 01:49 PM

This happened to me too but was told to check with the laundry dept. which I did and was so please they found it sitting on the shelf. Give it a try.

My Gt. Aunt's quilt did the same thing...even with her name and room # embroidered into the front of the quilt. Another lady had taken it away from my Aunt.
Hope that this gets resolved quickly...best wishes.

You were lucky to get the Nursing home to agree to pay for the materials needed to make Grandma Mary a new quilt. I made a very special quilt for Lola, my daughter's grandmother-in-law. Before my daughter had a chance to give her the quilt, Lola, an Alzheimer's patient, was put in a nursing. The family was warned not to bring anything that was irreplaceable, as they are not responsible for loss or theft. Now, that special Alzheimer's quilt that I spent so many hours making sits unused in the box in my daughter's closet. Lola will never benefit from all the helps I sewed into the quilt just for her.

BSKTLOFR-QUILTER 02-09-2012 07:41 PM

That was such a lovely quilt it is shameless that somebody would take it from a person who is in her condition. She is surrounded with love and caring people. Whatever you decide to make for her will give her comfort just know how much you care.

beaqltr 02-09-2012 07:58 PM

While my dad was in a rehab/nursing facility, there was a patient who roamed around taking things from patients rooms. The staff usually retrieved missing items. Ask them to notify day and night staff to look for quilt.

If it can't be located, try making a big block quilt. It is just a gigantic version of your favorite easy block. Or, make one with 6 big blocks - 2 x 3 about 15" to 18" each, with one or two borders, if needed.

nstitches4u 02-09-2012 08:01 PM

I'm so sorry that Granny Mary's quilt is missing. Unfortunately, a lot of nursing homes have employees who are "less than honest". If an employee takes something that does not belong to him/her, they would probably not confess and return the quilt. There is really nothing they can do except reimburse you for the cost of making a new quilt ---I would also charge them something for your labor. Good luck.

ragamuffin 02-09-2012 08:24 PM

I would post pics everywhere on the floors near her room. Most of the time it is an employee who takes it. My brother-in-law and his wife are both in a home here and his engraved watch that he received at his retirement has been missing for months. It is really sad that the workers in the home have to resort to stealing. I would have a policeman come in with a search warrant, he or she can be in plain clothes, and just search. Maybe if that is done some of this stealing will stop. Make sure you post the pics.

handquilter 02-09-2012 11:37 PM

Hi There, Sorry that you are having this trouble. Someone well just take the next quilt you make. Why don't you just buy a store one for her as long as she is in the nursing home.Handquilter

QM 02-10-2012 01:08 AM

It is unfortunately NOT uncommon for this to happen. My sister lost 2 this way. One was recovered. She suspected a staff member took the other. I would make another, but do less time consuming work on it. After all, you do want her to be comforted under your loving quilt. I would be inclined to use the same basic pattern, but just very quick quilting.

misseva 02-10-2012 09:17 AM

When my mother in law was in nursing home, the nursing assistants would take her diapers and use them on other patients so they wouldn't have to change their wet sheets. A kind nurse who befriended my SIL would store her diapers in the trunk of her car and use them as needed.

jmabby 02-10-2012 09:37 AM

Sorry to hear your quilt is missing. My mother, aunt, uncle and down the line were in nursing homes. We learned to give things that were nice and made them happy, but not a terrible loss if gone missing. We bought both my mother and aunt a quilt in a retail store, twin size, for about $30. They were happy with it and the quilts never got stolen. OR You could make a block pattern that is easy, but with something she enjoys, maybe large flowers - maybe a snowball pattern.

This is funny, but it did happen. My aunt kept having her false teeth taken. After 3 new sets we finally had to give up and not replace them. The dentist even engraved her name in them. We never found any of them. Some residents are so lonesome they take what they normally would'nt take, they don't have family that come to see them or give them something, it is really sad.

glenda5253 02-10-2012 01:40 PM

So sorry this happened! Sadly it is all too common a story. I too worry about our most vulnerable loved ones being fair prey for some immoral, despicable people. Most nursing home employees are angels from God but occasionally a bad apple gets in. You got some good suggestions on quick-together quilts. Good luck!

Jingle 02-10-2012 02:20 PM

What a shame someone would stoop so low. I've heard to not take anything of value to a hospital or nursing home. We have heard around here the weddings rings have been stolen off the fingers. I would never want to go there.

patdesign 02-10-2012 06:17 PM

It is truly sad to read some of these posts and to realize that a place we would think would be nurturing can have unkind and untrustworthy people.:(:(

I realize that the quilt is special especially now that she is getting sicker - If you dont have time for another one make her a couple of nice pillow cases - just a suggestion

Same here: prayers for Granny and her family AND for the one responsible for causing Granny's quilt to be missing. Yes, a search is indeed on thing that the "home" could do. I can't believe that person was so arrogant! Seems like someone needs to talk to her.

sewNso 02-11-2012 07:40 PM

when my MIL was in a nursing home, we found out that a lot of stuff is just shared. socks, are socks, blouses are blouses, etc. some of those ole folks would have nothing unless they wore what others 'left' after they weren't needed by the former patient.

cathyvv 02-11-2012 08:08 PM

I would take a walk around the nursing home and peer into other patients rooms. Sometimes folks in nursing homes 'like' something and just take it for their own. Not stealing because those that do this no longer know right from wrong...unless the 'wrong' is done to them!

You have my sympathy on the decline of Granny Mary. It's difficult to watch and be helpless at the same time.

cathyvv 02-11-2012 08:16 PM

Except that the quilt might have been taken by another patient who doesn't even know that he/she took something that belongs to someone else.

My MILs clothes would go missing - and I'd see someone else walking around in them. They always found their way back because of the labels in them.

Jean in Ohio13452 02-12-2012 03:36 PM

the quilt should have been listed on her Personal Belongings Sheet in her file. Since the quilt is missing then I would file a Police Report... there are Light fingered employees that are working there that should be punished and fired..
It is a CRIME to steal and I would make it known that you are contacting the police or Sheriff...The person who did the stealing if they are CNA or STNA and are caught they will Loose their License...
If your Granny is declining in Health then make another easy quilt and Tie it... Take Several photos of it with her and put a photo in her file... and you keep the other photos... or if she climbs Heaven's steps before you get it done then make Lap robes for others in the nursing home... Make sure you note the Date you gave her the Quilt on the picture and have the Social Worker or DON or Administrator stand and hold the quilt with Granny and take the photo...
Its a SHAME that who ever took it was that desperate to Steal a Treasured item and may it never keep them warm...

Jean in Ohio13452 02-12-2012 03:44 PM

The Nursing Home I worked in had some Family members visiting with their loved ones and took them on a ride down the hall, a Nursing Assistant had the nerve to steal money out of their purse, so a Trap was set and the next time the lady visited her mother and left the room the same Aide went in and took $$ again ...well she ended up with the Purple stuff allover her hands and clothes from the Special stuff they put in there... and she was easily identified...She couldn't wash the stuff off her hands... oh Gee she even touched her face.... and she was fired...
