granny square block

I have been looking for a 6" granny square block pattern. would like one that's free, i don't think it's a hard block, but can't seem to figure out the sizing to make my finished block the right size. anyone here know where to look? thanks

For a 6" block your patches should finish at sqrt(2), which is very hard to measure. You would be cutting them at *about* 1.9". If you don't have to have exactly a 6" block it would be easier to cut the patches at 2", and your block will be just a little over 6" finished.

I went looking through my EQ7 block library and didn't find a granny square block that resembled what I think you want, so I drew it in a 6 inch block. It wasn't hard at all. This is the rotary cutting instructions for a 6 inch finished block.

I played with the printing instructions and if you were to be satisfied with a 6.5 inch finished block, all your squares could be cut at 2 inches. This would let you use jelly rolls if you want to.

Remember that the math changes when you set anything on point. You have to be somewhat flexible in the final size of the block.

If you wanted to get a fairly "exact" 6 inch finished block - you could draw out the block on graph paper -

and then make templates from your drawing.

You would only need three templates - one for the squares, one for the side triangles, and one for the corner triangles.

How I make templates:

1) Draw out the "finished" quilt block on graph paper

2) Cut the pieces apart

3) Glue (I used rubber cement) the needed pieces on template plastic, leaving about 3/4 inch between the pieces

4) Add 1/4 inch around the pieces

5) Cut out the templates

You are welcome. The block looks harder than it is.

Thank you Barb....that block you did will be excactly right. So thankful you took the time to do that for me!

Update...I made a test of the Lori Holt block and the size is just right, but I think the block might be too busy for my needs...it has 4 rounds to the granny square.

Barb, I think I will use the pattern you did up for me, that only has 3 rounds....I think it will look better in my project.

Thanks again everyone for your help!
