Granny Square question

Hi. I'm making my first Grammy square quilt. I'm putting the first block together, the outside white/background squares are cut 1/2" bigger on one side to allow for squaring up. But I don't know whether the 4" side or the 4.5" side gets sewn onto the block. Help!

A picture or drawing would help to see what the " Granny" block is. The only pattern I can think of is Grandmothers flower garden and it is hexagons.

I have always like that block, but never saw directions as EASY as these to make it! All others deal with triangles on edges...... Thanks for this one...going to SAVE for a try....

Thank you for this link. already planning on my quilt retreat in October (just arrived home from the April retreat) I have a 30's jelly roll and think this would be ideal for this quilt. Sharon
