I am a scrappy girl so I love gray and all colors in between. There are some colors I don't like as well as others, but I still love them in a truly scrappy quilt. That said, I am not wild about that quilt either. That gray is sort of blaaah, but there ae a lot ofcolos like that Good for some things, not or others I am working on a scrappy Ocean Waves right now - it has upwards of 3,000 hst and I just love it. It's Bonnie Hunters pattern and I am crazy for the movement in these blocks - black is my constant and it does a great job of showing off the different fabrics used. A dark grey could have been used in mine, but put that med tone grey and everything would have been drug down (my opinion). That might be a good color for really brights? I'm not a fan of the OMG colors.

I love the grays, what I will never use is civil war prints. Variety is the spice of life.

meanmom 02-16-2014 07:12 AM

I love gray but have found you have to be really careful of your choice of gray. SOme grays just kill the beauty of the other colors in the quilt. I wanted to make a purple and gray baby quilt. I found some beautiful purples but the gray just made the purple look blah! I tried numerous combinations and eventually gave up and used white. I have since found some good combos. Who knew it was so hard to match a gray to anything.

KimmerB 02-16-2014 07:14 AM

I do like the grays, but also lots and lots of other colors. It all depends on the quilt.

Krystyna 02-16-2014 07:28 AM

I'm with you. Swap the gray for white or even light tan. Anything but gray. Blechhhh. Life is in color. Gray is just so ... dead.

BettyGee 02-16-2014 08:09 AM

I like gray, but only in small amounts. I'm with you on too much can be drab. There is a pattern I like very much that uses gray with taupe, beige and other neutrals; it is beautiful. Gray has its place, but I like it in small amounts.

trolleystation 02-16-2014 10:11 AM

Just finished a quilt for this year's church bazaar. Focus print has dark blue/gray background. Then I threw in some rust dotted circles and a soft gray circle material. I am loving it. I do agree that you have to be careful with gray because it can cause a drabness to your quilt.

sewbizgirl 02-16-2014 10:17 AM

I do like gray a lot, in the right context. It's a lovely neutral, an alternative to white or black. I used it on a wedding quilt last year, see here:

Just out of curiosity, what background color would you have chosen for the AQS winning quilt?

quilter2090 02-16-2014 10:22 AM

I agree, I am not overly fond of gray's that are so popular now. Give it a little time, and gray's will go out of style.

Tartan 02-16-2014 10:32 AM

Sewbizgirl-I would have chosen any lighter colour, even a lighter gray would have been okay. It does make a good backdrop for the machine quilting which might have been her goal? I think she choose a fairly dark background so the points were more visible. With that pattern I would have chosen a creamy white or marbled beige so the piecing was more the focal point and made sure my points had enough colour to stand out. It is still a wonderful quilt!

JoyceHoopes 02-16-2014 11:59 AM

I have to say I'm not overly fond of the grey background on this quilt. Maybe in person, it looks better. There doesn't seem to be enough contrast to me. When I see a lot of grey, I immediately look for the civil war connection.

maminstl 02-16-2014 12:39 PM

I do like grey, but there is always a background tone to find- warm gray, cool grey - makes a huge difference. I love the grey in this quilt

spaghettimom 02-16-2014 01:13 PM

I don't like grey either- reminds me of these grey clouds shedding snow right now. Depressing.

JanieH 02-16-2014 01:20 PM

I love grays - from the soft pale ones to the almost blacks. Of course, as with any color, how I use it depends on the pattern and the mood I want.

Seaside gal 02-16-2014 02:05 PM

Nope , not fond of gray but my son wants a quilt in burgundy and gray. It needs another color but nothing seems to go. Blue, white, yellow, gold, nothing goes with. Black is out because I cannot see to sew on black and it doesn't look good either. I did like pink and gray way back when it was Elvis' favorite color.

quiltmom04 02-16-2014 02:14 PM

I think grey is just a sad, sad color. Cold and sad. But, to each his own!

mrs. fitz 02-16-2014 03:57 PM

I have to get out more; didn't know about the sudden popularity of gray. I think I like it, I KNOW I like QUILTINGHAVEN's quilt on page 3 of this topic. It's very different and a wonderful quilt.

caspharm 02-16-2014 05:17 PM

Maybe it looked better in person. Grey does tend to wash out in pictures.

Regarding the quilt show, I heard the same thing about the quiltshow from one of the members of my guild that there was a somewhat sad turnout and not a large number of quilt. In addition, some of the vendors had cancelled because they were worried about low turnout. She also said that the first year for a new location can be like that.

Apparently, the Phoenix AQS quilt show will actually be held in Taos, NM next year, since the SuperBowl will be in Phoenix next year and will return to Phoenix the following year

loisf 02-16-2014 05:30 PM

I love grey, especially the taupy greys. My house is full of that wonderful color. What I don't like are blues and reds. I love aqua, but "true blue" is a huge turn-off for me. So is red. Different strokes. (Although I have to admit that I've made some quilts with greys, browns and blues that I really liked.)

Amythyst02 02-17-2014 04:15 AM

I love the quilt as well, but I am not so crazy about the grey.

llong0233 02-17-2014 08:21 AM

I'm with you on this. The quilt did win first, but when the gray was described as "an interesting choice", it was probably the quilting and piecing that elevated this quilt to winner status, not the colors. There will always be some out there who have to take everything to a "different level" just because they can. Fortunately in our quilting world there's room for everyone.

*** I love gray.
Have lived in 2 gray houses.

*** My gray hair (which started in teens) went to white in my early 30's.
*** So like white too.

I'm currently making a quilt for my granddaughter's dorm room which is on the chilly side. She requested pink and gray so I have several pieces of each in prints with a couple of solids. Just a bit of white added in, and I want to keep it myself because the pink and gray are so pretty together. Looks so soft and cozy in flannel.

LynnVT 02-17-2014 09:32 AM

This is a fun discussion. Snooze, your comment made me giggle - yes, according to popular romance there are at least Fifty Shades of Gray! I am not crazy about the color either, though someone gave me a couple of pieces, so I made a fall pumpkin quilt out of one. Last year a relative wanted pink and gray chevron, so I made it, but not my taste. As with many things, some day it will go out of fashion and we'll all cringe when we remember the gray craze of the twenty-teens. I feel the same way about stainless steel appliances.

jaly3162 02-17-2014 10:01 AM

I've always liked the color grey (and not because my last name is Gray). There is so much that goes with it.

Thank you, quiltin-nannie, for your comment, which made me go back and find the zoom feature--that quilting IS gorgeous, and I would have missed it!

Bluelady 02-17-2014 10:52 PM

I like the grays. Just not in my hair.

AlaskaAlice 02-18-2014 12:57 AM

I like clear, clean, colors! "greyed" colors are hard for me to see.. I found an article about color blindness that explained why all my art was turning out grey and muddy... I could not believe what it told me until I had my daughter and husband take the test also and they could see what I could not..when I went for an eye check up my eye Dr. confirmed it was true..the more pure the color dyes are the better I like them..grey can make me feel confused, etc. I like gray if it is made by complimentary colors and put beside a dominate color it is made with.. Colors can make a person sick, weak, etc. if they are wrong for the person.. I learned from a blind artist that colors have different feel to them when you touch them..really interesting study!! I think that is why when we feel colors of fabric some feel so good and others do not.. (my 2cents worth):)
Boy do I wish I could do quilting like that!!

jitkaau 02-18-2014 04:21 AM

I like putting pinky/ purple florals with the greys.

Bons 02-18-2014 07:55 AM

To me gray is a classic much like black, with gray being less cold or harsh. I find white crisp.

A beautiful amethyst looks striking along with the correct gray. White is too much. A slate teal is complimented aside a nice gray. I was worn out with navy and most blues growing up but when my daughter paired navy, a silvery blue, white and a calm gray I ate my words. Better Homes and Gardens had a paint display that we painted my daughters house. You have to look to see is that gray or is that taupe. Then every room changes with a guest bath in a soft victorian pink, soft white and the deep green from moss. Breakfast room starch white cafe curtains with turquoise & a hint of lime green. That navy in the living room, dining room something else. Master is amethyst and a bit darker gray that is comfortable to a female and male room. But gray anchors the entire house.

Isn't it funny as quilters what we look at for color inspiration? And our take on colors? Yellow is my enemy, unless it's so buttery that I don't see it glaring at me any longer!

RavenLunaStitch 02-18-2014 08:58 AM

I love color. I never buy ANY fabric with gray or black in it, no exceptions. I do, however, use a LOT of white to make my colors even more vibrant!

More like popular "torture" tahn romance if you mean those awful books! LOL!! Grey is harsh during Ny winters.
