Great Find at Goodwill!
Hello all,
Stopped at one of my favorite thrift stores yesterday and found a OLFA Lip edge ruler for ..........are you ready for this...........$0.99! I couldn't believe it! What a score! Happy Quilting :) |
Great find. Don't you just love thrift stores.
Yeaaaa for you!
I love it when things like that happen. Love my lip edge ruler! |
You never know what you will find at goodwill, they have no idea what these kind of things are nor do they know they are so pricey to buy. A little bonus for us quilters.
Nice score! A few years back I found 20 yards of fancy black lace tulle at a Goodwill for $7. The cashier asked me what I was going to do with it, as she had her eye on it. Unfortunately items needed to be out for one full day before employees can buy them. At the time I had no clue what I was going to use it for. Just used it the other day to cover our grapevine on our fence, so the birds would not eat all of our grapes. Finally used it for something. Just had to wait ~8 years.

Great score!!!
wohoooooo !!! right timing, right place and great find !! woohooo
Good for you! Don't you just love it?
Fun to find a great deal, isn't it-? :)
Newbie Alert, what is a lip edge ruler and what do you use it for? Are they sorta like an add a 1/4 ruler used for paper piecing.
Great find!
You beat me! I got a 3 by 18 Olfa ruler for $1 at the Salvation Army thrift store last year.
I am so envious!! I couldn't do a single thing without my lip-edge. You were lucky on the pricing - I've found that depending on which Goodwill I go to pricing for crafty items can range from bargain-basement to outrageous. My local Goodwill currently has a bundle of 6 pairs of knitting needles priced at $10 and old skeins of yarn priced at $4.99 each.
Goodwill items here are way over priced. Salvation Army prices are so cheap I always say keep the change.
picture please. Congratulations
I have one of those rulers and they are great. You came out good on that one.
Most of these people pricing these things don't know what they have! Lucky for us!! :o
Great deal. Good for you!!
I was at our thrift store this afternoon to buy old sheets and flannel blankets. I found 6 sheets, 4 flannel blankets for $12. I use them to practice on my long arm. Fabulous place to buy cotton button down shirts. 100% cotton, 4 for $1 and there's plenty of fabric in one shirt, enough to total 2 fat quarters if you count the sleeves too!
If you live near Raleigh, NC don't read this.♦ |
Good for you!!

The lip ruler is probably the Olipfa ruler, 5x18" or 5x24" long. It has a small ledge on one end, underneath the ruler so that as you line it up along a straight table edge or the edge of your cutting mat, it acts as a barrier to keep the ruler from sliding. Gives you straighter cuts because the ruler tends not to slip when you are cutting long (such as 18-22") cut strips. It works like a t-square would for engineers. Walmart, Joannes and other chain places carry them.

Graet deal!
I can't remember ever seeing an Olfa ruler at a thrift store or a goodwill store. Maybe people don't toss them out very often. Or maybe I am always too late. LOL. |
I have one too and love it! Has a small crack in it, but hard to find a replacement, so I'm gonna keep it as long as possible.
mdall: Have you ever used a large t-square? If so, you know how there is a lower ridge on the one end so that you can snug it up to whatever you are working on? Most other rulers have a completely flat surface on both sides. With this ruler, you can "hook" it to the edge of your cutting matt and then just line up your measuring lines for rotary cutting your fabric. You don't have to worry about it moving around. It's 24" long and 5" wide. Mine is about 12 years old already and I wouldn't trade it for ANYTHING! |

Here's a link to the one that amazon sells. Mine is a lot older, and slightly different, but same concept for the lip to hold it snug to your cutting matt. |
Lucky you! Our Goodwill doesn't have anything useful. It's like the 4th weekend of somebody's moving sale. lol
Super find , I'd love to find those kind of things , but haven't yet.
I love thrift stores, you never know what you will find. I have found several pieces of fabric that looked brand new. Another thing to look for which is not quilting related is gift bags. They are a lot cheaper than buying them brand new. I look for them every time I go. Haven't bought a gift bag in two years.
What a great buy. Where am I when these deals come around...I did pick up some quilt books when one of the churches in town had their annual indoor/outdoor sale. I always head right over to the "craft" area.

Wow, great find!

Great find. Thrift stores are so hit or miss, depending on who is donating what and who gets there first, but to me that is part of the fun. I have three thrift stores on my "beaten path" so I check in often. Most times nothing, but every once in a while there is something good and it makes the hunt worthwhile.
Love those thrift shops--especially Goodwill.
Congrats on your find, guess I need to find my nearest thrift store to see if I can find some treasures.
Great find! I keep reading about all of your finds, but I have never found any good deal like this at good will. do you go regularly or were you just lucky?
my goodwill have BOLTS of fabric the other day I bought some fleece ( for my Veterans Project) it was sold by the bolt..... I got @10 yards of fleece for $ 5.00....... They also had bolts of cotton, and other fabrics.....smile~~~~~~ happy dance~~~~~~~
I found a Singer 4623 , for 9.00 and it sews beautifully, I bought it to leave on my houseboat to do some quick sewing,as WE come up from Fl to KY and stay aboard from May till labor day. Doing the Happy DANCE

Other things to look for at Goodwill and other thrift stores are the metal holders for records. Remember when there were records to play on a record player? Ya, that really dates me! They are great for holding your rulers of all kinds.
Travel irons, especially the ones that have the handle fold down and also have steam are a great item at the thrift stores. They pack very well with my June Taylor Cut & Press or any other kind of pressing board for traveling to retreats or classes. I made a little bag for mine and have a small pump bottle of spray starch in it too. I look for quilting books there too. Someone said to look for cotton sheets, etc to practice quilting on, and that is something that I hadn't thought of. Much better than buying cheap new fabric just for practice. Now I know what to do with my old sheets. I have made bags out of them to store some quilts in too. It's fun to go to those stores and see things and think, 'now what can I do with this that will work in my sewing room?' We'd be surprised to see just what we can come up with if we have that in mind as we go in. After all, quilters are very resourceful!!! Happy hunting!!! :) :) :) |
Your find was great. Hope you enjoy it much for a long time.
I love thrift stores and Goodwill as well. I've found fabric but would really love to hit a goldmine one of these days. |
that is so awesome, sometimes i find fabric scraps at my Goodwill
My best Thrift shop deal was at the Sally Ann. I found a Singer Press for $8.00, but it was 50% off day so I only paid $4.00 for it. It is great for fusing.
