Green Bargello and questions for expansion...

2 Attachment(s)
I am making a green Bargello for a friend for Christmas. I want to make it about 6 inches wider, or maybe 8 inches wider, before I add the borders. (The borders will probably be a thin white and then a much wider deep green.)

Which side of this would you add to?

And...I know I don't have to decide which way is up, but which of these two looks better? The one that looks sort of like mountains or the other. I will put the mountain side up first...though I guess they both could be called mountain-like.

Thanks for any input.

Unless your border fabrics are directional, it does not matter which way is up .... it could be turned either ways!

Although, I think you are also saying you are adding on more bargello strips before the borders, in which case, I think you need to take a look at how the design will play out, once you do .... add to the left? or right? or some on both sides?

I would never have thought of using a dotted fabric in a bargello, but I wanted you to know how much I like it! IN fact, I quite like the whole quilt!

Thank you! I was just sitting here wondering why I had added the dotted fabric. :)

I hadn't thought of adding some to each side. I may play with that. I have cut out 13 more strips (7 1/2 inches once sewn), and I am playing with them.

I guess it only matters which is up when I am ready to put the label on it. Not there yet...

It may be time to do something else for a bit. Maybe my brain will figure out what I want to do.

Brave person - soliciting opinions!
I like the first picture better - where the dotted fabric lies below the darker fabric. Like you, I see mountains and the dots are kind of like snow. Then, I would add to the right side only.
What a gorgeous quilt!!

Pretty start! Since the quilt can be turned either way, leave it up to the recipient to choose which side is up.

You're welcome!!
Another thought ..... with the added width, will it end up being square?
Bonus there ... there would be four ways to consider which way was up!
Sorry, if I have just thrown you a bigger dilemma.

As for the label ... just put it where you like, and your friend can just use the quilt whichever way s/he likes. Another option would be to put the label on an angle into the corner ... a little less demanding as to which way is up! :)

Since the quilt (so far) isn't symmetrical, it really doesn't matter which side you add to ... just stay with the flow. Part of the beauty of a bargello is that there doesn't have to be a top and a bottom edge.

FWIW, I've made at least five bargello quilts, and I think yours is absolutely GORGEOUS.

Thanks. I have become a Bargello addict. I think this is my 14th. :) I still learn something new every time...
