Can't think of another name to call it! Can I take my completed 432 blocks, put them in a grocery bag, shake the heck out of it and sit by my sewing machine and pull out block after block, sewing them together and still come out with a decent looking quilt? It is Floating stars with the dark at left bottom of the block and the light at the right top of the block. With the exception of putting two alike, which would mean double-dipping, so to speak, whatever I grab I sew next! I can't design it on the floor because we have a dog. Need I say more? I have no room to hang the felt to do the designing, so I thought I would ask you if any of you have heard of it, have tried it. liked the results or disliked the results.
I am trying to get these all put together and watch the Vikings kick Dallas' behind!!!!! So far the Vikes are ahead 17-3! Yay! Edie |
i wouldn't bet the farm on it

You can lay your blocks out on a bed and then pick them up row by row to sew together.

If this is the pattern, your idea would work beautifully, as the dark and the lights are randomly scattered across the quilt. :D:D:D

I love this type of project. It will work wonderfullly. Actually, if you end up with a few lighter blocks together instead of ll spread equally, it can create the feeling of sun shining through on your quilt. I love the prject idea and the grocery bag!

It's the random bag design. It is designed in part to help anally retentive matchy-matchy people to loosen up....and it is hard to do. The only rule I know is that you get to put back and repick if you pick the identical fabric immediately again.
I'm not sure that it would work for me if EVERYTHING was in one bag. I'd prefer to split the bags by color or value. Happy scrapping. |
what the heck is up with double posts these days?

With that pattern, because each piece is already value-sorte, I say go for it. If you need to swap one or two along the way, so be it. It should be absolutely gorgeous when you're done grocery bag picking it!
Just make sure you don't make any of your rows too long! |

i'm still trying to catch up. is it supposed to be all the darks in the lower left and all the lights in the upper right?
|
I do that sometimes. However, I do cheat and not place two of the same color right next to eachother. So, I guess that's double dipping. I love the scrappy look (that's why the same fab can't touch)

looks like a Cyrus-stuffed quilt-burrito.

I'm not sure I would be willing to try that. I lay mine out on the bed. I have to shut the door because my quilt inspector cats want to help. Just like the one in my avatar.

Anyhow, I have run into one little bit of a problem. Our local JoAnn's is closing down and moving to the 'burbs. (Our JoAnn's is the last urban JoAnn's store). Have about ten more miles to travel to get there, starting March 1. Anyhow, I went to get some rotary blades - all gone - went to get some 108" backing fabric - all gone - and then I totally forgot the background fabric (white on ecru). You can't find a darn thing around there anymore. I did get two new cutting mats. One is 12x18, the other is 6x8 ( I like that one). Everything is on sale there like you wouldn't believe. But they had the fabrics all mixed together by price and I just didn't have the time to go through everything. The new store will open March 1. Whoopee! I am not looking forward to this at all. The checkout girls said that it was the last urban store - I don't know if they meant in Minnesota or the US. She said every store is a big store now and they are all in the suburbs. We do have a small fabric store - Treadle Yard Goods - but you have to mortgage your house before you can buy any fabric there. So, I'll have to go to West St. Paul and hit Hancock's or Roseville and hit HAncocks. Both suburbs, but at least it is closer. So, I will keep you all posted on the grocery bag quilt. Edie |

Try the internet to find quilt shop quality fabric very reasonably priced. Two of my favorites: Quilt in a Day fabric frenzy and Hancock's of Paducah sale fabric $3.98 per yard. Don't have to sacrifice quality for price. |
