Group work day
 

Today, the comfort quilts organizer had a workday at her studio. There were 6 of us.

She had done a lot of straightening to her space since I was there last wk Tuesday. And she had some stations set up.

We had a good time together and got a lot of kits completed with top cut, backing cut, and batting cut. She'll add directions and label and hand them out to guild members in August. There were also kits with completed top, backing and batting to be quilted and one that needs binding. There must be 30 kits to hand out.

There's been another wild fire in the area with <60 homes distroyed. Some of the quilts will be given to the victims of the wild fire.

what a great idea to make the kits and distribute them.

we have a gal that likes to make kits for our charity quilts. and i enjoy having that part done.

I love the cutting process so I make most quilt kits for our charity quilts. I have never thought of sending out (as kits) the completed quilt top sandwiched and ready to "quilt". Some of our ladies may just LOVE to quilt. @ Petthefabric: how did you (or what did they) put the quilts w/backing and batting in? Our quilt kits fit in those gallon plastic zip bags, but a complete quilt would be pretty big. Maybe just tie it together with yarn or something?

There are 2 gallon and bigger zip lock bags- 2 gallon are where all the bags, foil etc are, bigger ones are where the laundry, closet items are-well in my Walmart that is where they are.

They weren't sandwiched. All the pieces were included.

We use 2 gal zip bags for sm to md/sm size. Mine are Raley's brand. Larger than that may require tying. Maybe a restaurant supply store would have larger. Or maybe find them online.

I love getting kits for charity projects! It is so easy to just sit and sew (or quilt) without having to worry about getting everything cut also. I do some things for Quilts for Kids and The Preemie Project, and they always just had kits ready to go. It takes a lot of prep work behind the scenes though, but it is greatly appreciated. As for having things ready to quilt only, I like quilting more than piecing. I would love to have completed tops sent with precut batting and backing ready to go.

FYI You can find zip bags at Dollar Tree in the laundry section. They come in 3 sizes, the largest (maybe XXL??) is 1 to the box, medium is 2 in box, smaller 3 in box. $1 each box. They are fairly heavy plastic bags. They just aren't the name brand, but do the trick. The dimensions are on the box so check there as I'm not sure of the name of the size shown on box. I can put 3 bed size tops in the largest, the smallest would work for a travel project bag, if I remember correctly.

Thanks for the information on the large zip lock bags. They sound like perfect bags for completed quilts to travel in, like to a quilt show. Garbage bags are a huge NO-NO, as that's how quilts get thrown away by mistake.

What a great idea for guild projects... especially since some people dislike the cutting process.
