I need some input/ advise, my sweetie went to JoAnn's and bought me a chest of Gutermann Thread of 100 colors for Christmas. I have never had anything like this and I am not sure if I can use them. Would you use them to quilt? They are such small spools, I hate not to find a use for them. He has said a few times, I can take it back and get anything else. I have never returned anything and I am not sure I want to. But I also do not want to not use them. Help.. I am sure someone can.
Thank you

I love Gutermann thread. It is a high quality thread, but all polyester. You certainly can use it for quilting, unless you are a purist and only use cotton. My problem with those chests is that I never buy just one spool of any color. Since I have sergers I usually buy at least 3 at a time, sometimes 4. I do a fair amount of regular sewing and mending for other people so lots of colors is important to me. For quilting I usually stick to a neutral color. So you can send the thread case to me

i love my guterman thread chest! i always have just the right color of thread i need for applique, and it works well for embroidery too. top stitching? again the right color. there may not be enough to quilt a quilt but there is plenty to sew with.... wouldn't try to machine quilt with them anyway...i have terrible luck trying to quilt with cotton threads, they break every couple inches...but for piecing/applique/embroidery...great thread!i love having a selection of colors! what a great gift!!!

Murphy 12-27-2010 05:12 AM

I love Gutterman thread and that is all that I use in my quilting. I love their color selection, etc. and know you will enjoy it once you start to use it.

janRN 12-27-2010 05:49 AM

I wouldn't return it. I like having lots of thread colors to chose from. I'd try to get some larger or additional spools of the colors you use most and save the other smaller spools for smaller projects like applique or top-stitching. What a great gift-enjoy.

Mattee 12-27-2010 05:52 AM

Sounds perfect for applique!

quiltmaker 12-27-2010 06:08 AM

Gutermann thread comes in 100% cotton and polyester. It is a great thread. Depending on whether you applique or not it would be a nice addition for you for those applications. The small spools would not work in quilting an entire quilt but would have many advantages in doing other embellishments on your quilt.

dakotamaid 12-27-2010 06:14 AM

Love those threads. Their colors are beautiful. However my machine doesn't like poly on top and something else in the bobbin. Play with your machine on scraps to determine if that is true of yours. Have fun.

dkabasketlady 12-27-2010 07:14 AM

Gutermann Thread is goooood thread! Try it, you'll like it(as Mikey says!!!)

tucsonquilter 12-27-2010 07:35 AM

I wait until Gutermann thread is on sale and then buy many colors. It is the only thread I like to use in my Sapphire Viking.

Maride 12-27-2010 07:46 AM

I got once a much smaller version of the chest and loved it. If you have a small project, you will always have the perfect color to match and at the least, you will know which color to order if you are buying on-line and need more than you have. I hate when I buy on-line that you can not see the real color. By having those you have the perfect reference chart, and you can start working while it arrives. Those spools look small but can hold quite a bit.

what a lovely lovely gift! wish my DH would get me some thing like that! Oh I for sure would keep it, great thread I love my Gutermann thread, and I have many colors, so nice to have on hand when you need a special color!

My DH also got me one for Christmas and I am useing it today! They work great!! I love them!!

jojosnana 12-27-2010 10:11 AM

I agree to use them. I see there are a lot of folks to take the ones you don't need. Put me on that list. smile

BellaBoo 12-27-2010 10:49 AM

The chest of colors is so nice! You got a great gift. I would certainly keep it. Cotton or poly. I have lots of Guttermann spools and they look small but really have a lot of thread once you see how thin the spool spindle is when one is empty. I'm not the least bit concerned if the thread is cotton or poly thread in my quilts. To me that is like being concerned if my child's eye color was blue or green.

Marye 12-27-2010 11:24 AM

That is all I use, don't like the others.

bj 12-27-2010 11:43 AM

That is an awesome gift. I got a smaller chest of their colored thread for when I need to sew down the binding or do applique'. Lots easier to hide the stitches if the thread matches. I don't use it for piecing or quilting, tho. I just use a neutral or gray for that.

Sewmuchtodo 12-28-2010 02:21 AM

Thank you all for your help. I am going to keep and use for small projects. I was thinking on the same lines, since I do applique and this will work better than the embroidery thread that I use. I knew if I came and asked I would get some great advise. Love this forum..

franc36 12-28-2010 06:35 AM

I have a cotton thread Guttermann chest that I got about six years ago. I love it! I use the thread for applique and sometimes for making doll clothes. The many colors come in handy if I'm in a hurry as we no longer have a store here that sells thread. I have to go to the city or buy thread on line. I store the Guttermann thread case in a dark place, a closet, and the thread is still good. When Joann's had their last big on-line sale that started at 12:01am, I stayed up and was logged on at 12:01 to purchase the Guttermann polyester thread chest that they had advertised for 50% off. I like the thread that much! At 12:01, I got the message that they had already sold it out. I'll bet you'll find use for your threads. Congratulations!

That is a gift that I would LOVE and I think, in time, you will be very happy with it. When I piece a quilt I always use a neutral color...maybe ecru or gray. However, when I go to classes to learn new things and there is always some appliqueing or top-stitching that I need to do and the project sheet always says to "bring thread to match". I hate like everything to have to spend $3-5 on a spool of thread that I am going to use only once to applique around an object. And, of course, I never notice this on the project sheet while I am at home and could look through my collections of used only-once thread spools so there I am, at the store (getting ready for class) and buying yet another spool of thread. So, I think the chest would come in handy (and, yes, I realize I would need to think ahead! LOL) Hope you enjoy it!

quilt3311 12-28-2010 07:13 AM

I've used that thread for thread painting.

Annaquilts 12-28-2010 07:16 AM

I have a small selelction of 40 little spools and use them for when I need something color matched. I think it is handy.

JeanDal 12-28-2010 07:55 AM

If you don't use for actual quilting, maybe you can take a spool with you to the store for color matching.

BettyGee 12-28-2010 07:55 AM

Abeautiful gift! Gutterman is the best and I use it for applique, the colors are like jewels and bet you'll love them once you try them.

I'm glad you're going to keep it. Since you do applique and you said the spools don't have a lot of thread on them, this large selection of colors seems like a perfect thing for you to have.

And you're right, you do get lots of opinions here on the QB!

catrancher 12-28-2010 10:26 AM

I agree with others. I think you'll find uses for them. If you need more of a certain color, buy it as you go. I bought a large collection a while back and I use it all the time in appliqué and embroidery.

MadQuilter 12-28-2010 10:30 AM

I would use it for the decorative stitches or machine applique on a quilt. I have a different thread chest and can't wait to use the yummy colors.

Dee 12-28-2010 07:20 PM

Love that thread. Thread is one of my collections.

Annz 12-28-2010 08:25 PM

I love Gutermann thread and I think you will use them. Also it was so sweet for your DH to pick this out for you so I would keep it and let him know you appreciate it. You will use them.

nursie76 12-28-2010 08:32 PM

My DH got me one last Christmas and I am still using it frequently and just love the selection of colors! I use Gutermann polyester sew-all for everything. What I am doing is that as I use the different colors up, I keep the empty spool and then when there is a Joanns coupon or when is 50% off, I replace it with a larger spool, so I am slowly building a collection of the lareger spools in the colors I use the most. How sweet of you DH.

FranW 12-28-2010 08:35 PM

I wait until Gutermann thread is on sale and then buy many colors.

I would love one of those chests. Your sweetie is a dear!

penski 12-28-2010 08:44 PM

sounds like a good present to me !!!

I prefer it for my Sapphire also but have recently been trying Connecting Threads.

I love Guterman threat, cotton and poly! I also have the 100 spool thread chest and I love it! It has been great for many machine applique' projects that I love to do! What a great gift, your are a lucky lady! Happy sewing. Patty

I looked at that when it was on sale as well and decided two things. One, that I didn't need a metal rack for something I rarely buy and two, that there wasn't enough thread to a spool for regular use. I usually buy cones of thread so it seemed silly to buy small ones. Those are for a special project with a specific color! I'd say take it back and have some fun getting other things! Quilting things are 50% starting this Sat plus an additional 10% coupon! Go for it!

milkbone 12-29-2010 09:06 AM

I bought the same chest at JoAnn's a couple of years ago. I thought it was too pretty to open and use but FINALLY I got the nerve to take the first spool out of the chest. The spools are small so it isn't enough to do a whole quilting project---BUT you can go and get a larger spool of thread in the same color if you want. What I have used the smaller spools for is applique projects, bindings, and hand work. I keep the major colors in my small sewing box (they are just the right size) and replentish the colors as needed. Enjoy your chest----don't take it back.
