Gutterman sulky
 

I have done a search but can't find the answer to my query so hope it's okay to start a new thread.
I have purchased a nice variegated 100% cotton Gutterman Sulky thread to do some quilting with but have just had it pointed out to me that it was in the "machine embroidery" thread section of the haby store where I purchased it. So, can I use this for machine quilting? I was so taken with the colors as it is exactly what I wanted I didn't realise I had strayed into the machine embroidery section of the thread aisle. Oh dear....will it be okay to use and also can I use a 100% polyester thread in the bobbin as I have a polyester thread that matches my backing perfectly.

Some embroidery threads are not a strong... do the break test and see if it matches up with your other machine quilting threads .. if it does .. go for it. Just do some small samples to get your tensions correct.

Gutterman 100% cotton thread is fine to machine quilt with. I use it on my vintage machines all the time. However, most people use the same color thread in top and bottom so that you don't see the bottom thread on the top and vice versa. It could become a really big tension headache if you use a different color. Try it and see. My preference is to use the same colors on top and bottom.

Just gave the sulky embroidery 100% cotton thread a tug and it broke about the same as my other Gutterman 100% cottons and also the polyester thread. Couldn't really feel a difference between them so I guess as long as the tension looks okay I should be fine?

I thought Sulky embroidery thread is rayon. Rayon is a weak thread and not recommended for quilts that will be used and washed.

no, this one definately says Sulky Gutermann 100% cotton...cotton 30. It was in a section that says Machine Embroidery as opposed to the section that may say for example....."all purpose" , or "hand quilting" and so forth. Surely if it was Rayon it would'v said that on the spool? says she starting to mildly panic after going ahead and starting to quilt with it!

Then you're fine. 30 wt. cotton is heavy, but you're set to go.

One of my favourite threads for FMQ! The colours are great and I've never had a problem with snapping. One thing however - as it's a slightly thicker thread (I usually use 40wt for quilting, 50wt for piecing) the bobbin doesn't hold a lot of thread, so you may have to fill frequently if you're going to use it in your bobbin. I learned something. I thought Sulky was different from Gutterman. I've used both and thought they were different companies! Live and learn.
