I think it has a lot more to do with the fabrics than the pattern for a guy.

Depending on your material the BQ patterns are very nice. I just made one for a guy and he loved it.

QuiltE 10-04-2011 07:30 PM

Find a print that "speaks" of your friend! There's some computer type ones ... or if he happens to be a hunter or fisher!

Then use the Churn Dash block with the print in the centre of the Churn Dash and coordinating fabrics on the outside.

Rail fence can be a good guy pattern! Traditional rails or do the centre one twice as wide as the outside two.

spinnergs 10-04-2011 07:37 PM

I think country stars are always a good guy thing.

Kristin in ME 10-04-2011 07:43 PM

Bear claw...

Pamela LeMaster 10-05-2011 03:18 AM

bow tie? I aint too traditional though sorry

carslo 10-05-2011 06:34 AM

I just finished the top of a 120 x 120 in dark brown, wedgewood blue and a forest scene in those colors plus tan for my oldest son I used a double Irish Chain and it went together really well and looks nice.

Barbshobbies 10-05-2011 11:47 AM

Man you quilters are good, I love them all.......... I have a son-in- law that helps me with every thing I can`t do myself. And I have been canning & freezing all the things he likes, but a quilt (any one) shown here is a great idea.

Love your hat !!!!

This pattern was NOT that hard, just had to follow the directions, all done in sections. If you are interested would be happy to send you the pattern......

If you've already got the fabric, I would pick a pattern made up of various rectangles - like a YBR or a turning twenty. If you've got a good variety of fabrics in mind, lots of the Bonnie Hunter patterns would work up great for a guy. You can find them at http://www.quiltville.com.

I'm sure you'll know it when you see it
Here's a classic example ...
http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-624-1.htm
See how you see the "rail fence" zig zag down the quilt, just as the old fashioned rail fences used to zig zg across the fields!

Here's another one that's more dramatic ...
http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-83498-1.htm

One of the prettiest ones I ever saw done was a Pink/Black print and a black/pink print with an eyelet lace in the middle. (Sissy, take note and hint hint hint!!!!)

Most Traditional Rail Fences were three rails, though of course, there's lots of twists and possibilities where people have added rails or combined a rail fence with focus fabric blocks or stars, etc.

girliegirl 10-05-2011 03:55 PM

i would love it.

I like Fat Friday for a guy quilt. There are several advantages to the pattern, you don't waste anything when you cut your pieces, and once you've cut what you need, the remainder of your pieces go into making a Candy Bar Quilt that is also included with the Fat Friday pattern

I think it is mainly a matter of colors and fabrics. Many, probably most guys like quiet colors. My DH likes jewel tone batiks. The guys that shop at our quilt auction like patterns that incorporate wildlife and ranching pix. I see lots of quilt made with team logos. I think you're going to have to figure out what works for HIM.

Simple 7" blocks or whatever size works too. Also denim fabric from used jeans makes a nice mans quilt, depends on the style you want.

sewbeadit 10-08-2011 11:09 PM

Simple stripes might work too, just make the whole thing stripes.

Riversong 10-09-2011 04:30 AM

I like the Bow Tie or Churn dash idea. They are nice man patterns.
